Test Engineer duties include medium and high voltage apparatus testing and functional verification of control, protection, and alarm circuits. Senior Test Engineers also provide setting and testing of protective relays while performing the same functional verification. Engineers must understand Doble, Fluke, and other test equipment operation, interpret test results, read technical documentation, and be familiar with IEEE standards, ANSI/IEEE device function numbers, and the latest NETA Acceptance and Maintenance Testing Specifications.
Senior Test Engineers must additionally demonstrate a thorough understanding of substation physical drawings, equipment wiring diagrams, and control schematics. They will be asked to explain substation protection philosophy, feeder protection, breaker failure protection, bus protection, power transformer protection, capacitor bank protection, and distance protection concepts and settings.
Minimum requirements include a BSEE, BSME, or BSEEET degree and 6–10 years of experience for senior roles, or an equivalent education/experience mix. Senior engineers must obtain NICET Level III certification, practice strong safety habits, possess excellent organizational and communication skills, have working knowledge of test equipment, and hold a valid driver’s license with insurance eligibility. Candidates must pass client‑mandated drug and background checks and cannot require future visa sponsorship.
