Staff Geologist or Scientist

Description

• Assist with review and interpretation of environmental data.
• Develops a working understanding of policies and procedures for health and safety, including clientspecific training (as required), and demonstrates use and understanding of these policies and procedures as appropriate to their work.
• Follow established standards, policies, procedures, and guidelines to complete entry level and routine assignments.
• Assist with preparation of final soil boring logs, crosssections, trench logs, and other report supporting documentation.
• Complete applicable company and client required health & safety training (including OSHA required training) and follow health & safety policies and procedures.
• Builds and maintains productive professional and personal networking relationships within their technical team, internal clients, and external clients. An ability to collaborate within their team is key.
• Performing outdoor, allseason, onsite geological and environmental investigation work at sites ranging from commercial/industrial sites to open and remote spaces. Expectation of 70% field to 30% officebased ratio of supporting multiple projects.
• Prepare permit applications for soil borings, well installations and destruction.
• Conducting subsurface geologic investigations in connection with evaluation of various media (soil, sediment, soil vapor, surface water, and groundwater).
• Responsible for fieldwork including coordination of subcontractors, completing utility clearance for ground disturbance locations, oversight of drilling by subcontractors (hand auger, direct push, hollowstem auger, air vacuum), oversight of soil excavations by subcontractors, installation of soil vapor probes, installation of groundwater monitoring wells, performing hand auger drilling, soil logging, trench logging, surface water and stormwater sampling, collection of environmental samples (soil, sediment, soil vapor, groundwater, ambient air), and preparation of daily field documentation of health and safety and field activities.
• Assist with preparation of work plans, sampling and analysis plans, health and safety plans, and technical reports (soil and groundwater assessment, remedial excavations, well destruction, Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments).

Requirements

• Ability to lift 50 lb. objects to chest height is required.
• Some projects may require successful completion of background LiveScan check/fingerprinting.
• A willingness to frequently work at sites throughout the Southern California area is required (including hotel stays for multiday projects), with occasional work at sites in Central and Northern California, and rarely at outofstate project sites.
• Dedication to successful project execution and technical excellence, with a proven ability to adapt to changing scope and situations in the field.
• Minimum 13 years’ work experience; or an equivalent combination of education (e.g., advanced degree) and experience. Coop/internship experience preferred.
• Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Geology, Environmental Science, or related field.
• A clean, valid Class C driver's license is required for this position, and familiarity with driving larger vehicles (pickup trucks) and driving offroad is preferred.
• Values the importance of quality, thoroughness, and clear communication in field and office tasks
• Attention to detail in note taking and documenting daily field activities and communicate daily with the project team.
• At minimum, possesses a basic understanding of technical writing skills, with a desire to develop writing skill over time. Project scopes of work vary greatly; we require a dynamic team member who can work at a fast pace and adapt to variations in an office versus fieldbased workload.
• Applies logic, problem solving, and can resolve technical issues in an effective manner, often under timesensitive scenarios.
• Prior to employment, this position will require the successful passing of a preemployment physical exam.

Benefits

• For field projects, expectation to work 10–12hour days. Some work may require occasional holiday, night, and/or weekend shifts. All overtime is compensated.
