The crew chief will supervise a survey team, enforce safety protocols, and maintain high‑quality work standards while coordinating with engineers, other surveyors, and project managers to meet project requirements.
Field work will involve operating total stations, GPS equipment, terrestrial scanners, unmanned aerial systems, and levels, as well as ensuring routine maintenance, calibration, and repair of all surveying instruments and the assigned work truck.
Accurate field notes, sketches, images, and reports will be prepared, and comprehensive quality‑control procedures will be applied to all survey data and documentation.
- Lead and supervise survey crews on horizontal, vertical, ROW, boundary, DOT, railroad, and municipal projects.
- Conduct field surveys using robotic total stations, GPS receivers, digital levels, terrestrial scanners, and UAVs.
- Perform annual calibration and routine maintenance of all surveying equipment and coordinate repairs.
- Manage work‑truck upkeep, mileage logs, and safety audits.
- Prepare detailed field notes, sketches, photographic records, and comprehensive survey reports.
- Implement quality‑control reviews to verify data completeness and compliance with project specifications.
- Train and mentor junior surveyors in techniques, equipment operation, and safety practices.

Wilson & Company is hiring a skilled Survey Crew Chief for its Kansas City, MO office to lead a variety of survey assignments throughout the Midwest, including horizontal and vertical control, ROW and boundary retracements, DOT projects, and railroad and municipal surveys.
Candidates must have at least four years of experience as a Survey Crew Chief, a valid driver’s license, strong leadership and communication skills, and a proven record of delivering precise survey data; familiarity with Trimble equipment and an FAA Part 107 UAS pilot license are preferred.
- Travel up to 65% of the time, typically on a 10‑day rotation (Monday‑Wednesday on‑site, four‑day weekend).
- Preferred experience with Trimble surveying hardware.
- Minimum four years as a Survey Crew Chief with a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Possess a valid driver’s license; FAA Part 107 UAV pilot license is a plus.
