The OSP Field Engineer provides training and supportive engineering services by collecting detailed telecommunications information on‑site. This role validates existing field designs for aerial, buried, and underground fiber networks, including conduit, handhole, building entrance, and riser facilities, and may occasionally lead junior staff.
- Identify, photograph, and document cables, poles, terminals, pedestals, handholes, and other OSP infrastructure.
- Capture accurate measurements of attachment heights, span distances, utility structures, and distances to centerlines, property lines, and curb lines.
- Identify power and communication facilities and ownership on utility poles.
- Record bonding, grounding, guying, and anchor information.
- Deliver detailed field notes and photographs to the engineering team.
- Identify obstructions to fiber placement and propose mitigation strategies.
- Read and interpret digital GIS maps, conduit records, and layout drawings.
- Utilize measuring wheels, height sticks, pull finders, GPS devices, MH/HH hooks, and laser rangefinders.
- Operate electronic devices (iPad, iPhone, laptop) and manage file sharing and email.
- Identify utility types and potential conflicts per regulatory standards (RUS, NESC, GO95, NEC, etc.).

The position requires frequent physical activity, such as lifting up to 50 pounds, walking up to 3 miles on varied terrain, and working outdoors 95 % of the time. Travel is extensive, often covering multiple states, with the ability to travel up to 100 % of the time, including overnight stays and short‑notice assignments.
- Understand OSP construction techniques.
- 3+ years experience in fiber‑optic/telecommunications construction.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Knowledge of outside plant activities (fiber cable design, pole line construction, conduit system design) and make‑ready issues.
- Experience obtaining right‑of‑ways/easements and annotating field notes for desktop teams.
- Ability to read as‑built prints, identify conflicts, and select routing for projects.
- Familiarity with GIS, ESRI, and shapefile functionality.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD (a plus).
- Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and ability to pass drug screen and background check.
- Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
