Protection & Controls (P&C) Technician II

Description

The role involves installing, commissioning, testing, and maintaining protective relay equipment, powerline carrier equipment, digital fault recorders, remote terminal units, and communication processors. Technicians perform functional testing of protection and control circuitry for transmission lines, HV bus, transformers, circuit breakers, feeders, reactors, and capacitor banks, and execute RTU and telecom upgrades for various clients.

• Install, commission, test, and maintain protective relay and powerline carrier equipment.
• Perform functional testing of protection and control circuitry for HV transmission assets.
• Upgrade remote terminal units (RTUs) and telecom systems for client sites.
• Work with SEL microprocessor relays (e.g., 311C, 387, 487B) and GE relays (e.g., C30, D60).
• Review, document, and submit test reports for client and regulatory use.
• Interpret one‑line, three‑line, wiring, and schematic diagrams and identify discrepancies.
• Complete time, expense, and vehicle condition reports accurately.
• Scope, schedule, and budget protection, control, RTU, and telecom projects.
• Manage protection and control teams in high‑voltage substations.
• Ensure compliance with NERC CIP requirements.

Requirements

Candidates should have five or more years of experience in electrical testing with protection and control equipment, RTUs, and telecom in high‑voltage utility or related environments, plus a BS in Engineering, a technical diploma, or relevant military training. Experience with SEL, GE, ABB, and Westinghouse relays, substation RTUs, and project scoping, scheduling, and budgeting is required, along with familiarity with NERC CIP standards.

Applicants must be able to lift up to 50 lb, climb ladders, stand for extended periods, and hold a valid driver’s license. They must pass a fit‑for‑duty physical, pre‑employment drug test, background check, 30‑hour OSHA training, and be fluent in English. Overtime work and extensive travel to client sites are expected.
