The Senior Plans Examiner is responsible for technically reviewing construction documents for residential, multi‑family, and commercial projects. The role ensures drawings, calculations, soils reports and other documents conform to the California Building Standards Codes and Reference Standards, assessing life‑safety and code compliance. The position requires thorough knowledge of inspection and plan‑review protocols, policies, and procedures.
- Review construction documents (drawings, calculations, soils reports) for compliance with California Building Standards Codes and Reference Standards.
- Interpret maps, diagrams, electronic plans, and specifications to ensure code conformity.
- Provide expert code interpretation and suggest alternate compliance methods.
- Supervise Associate or Assistant Plans Examiners.
- Prepare and present oral and written reports, including correction notices.
- Develop proficiency with electronic plan‑check software and management tools.
- Maintain effective relationships with government agencies, architects, contractors, engineers, and the public.
- Represent the department in internal and external meetings.
- Stay current on legal and technical developments in building construction and codes.
- Pursue and maintain additional ICC certifications relevant to the role.

The work environment is a general office setting with occasional overtime, standing at a workstation, walking, bending, and lifting up to 35 lb. The examiner must be able to travel to job sites, work independently or in a team, and handle multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment.
- 5–10 years experience reviewing plans for California Building Standards Code compliance.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- ICC Building, Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing Plans Examiner certification (or additional ICC/CASp certifications) required.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office, Bluebeam, Bluebeam Studios, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, etc.
- Strong communication skills with internal and external customers of varying technical expertise.
- Ability to remain calm under stress, adapt, and overcome obstacles.
- Capable of managing multiple priorities simultaneously.
