The Area Lead partners with the Department Manager/Regional Manager to coordinate workload, delegate assignments, and ensure timely completion of project work. In addition to production duties, the role includes hiring, training, and developing staff, as well as interfacing with clients and other WSP offices to achieve Business Unit objectives. The AL is expected to maintain approximately 60 % utilization while participating in production work.
- Oversee Hawaii team, preferably based in Hawaii or Western US, with periodic travel to Hawaii.
- Support Department Manager/Regional Manager in workload coordination, assignment delegation, and project oversight.
- Lead hiring, training, and development of staff; interface with clients and other WSP offices.
- Foster WSP culture, values, and mission; develop next‑generation leaders.
- Drive business planning, innovation, and process improvement; execute Knowledge Management Program.
- Participate in production work maintaining ~60% utilization.
- Plan and coordinate staff assignments, project resourcing, department workload, and workflows.
- Ensure QA/QC of all departmental work.
- Contribute to marketing and proposal preparation, including work‑plan development and budgeting.
- Build and maintain relationships with current and potential distribution clients.
- Conduct regular staff meetings, performance reviews, and provide coaching.
- Manage employee timecards, expenses, and personnel requests.
- Implement staff training per business plan and develop personal management skills.
- Execute annual recruiting plan for junior to senior staff; involve existing staff in college recruiting.
- Collaborate with other Business Units and divisions; share work and build rapport across offices.

WSP is seeking an Area Lead for Distribution Department 002168 San Diego, who will provide managerial support and directly oversee the Hawaii team. Preference is given to candidates located in Hawaii or the Western United States with the ability to travel periodically to Hawaii.
The role demands at least five years of relevant leadership or industry experience, one year of experience at WSP, and expertise in 2.4‑35 kV distribution design and applicable standards. Strong emotional intelligence, analytical, communication, and teamwork skills are required, along with a proven safety record. Preferred qualifications include a BSEE/BSEET degree, Professional Engineer status, and additional years at WSP.
- Minimum 5 years leadership/industry experience; at least 1 year at WSP.
- Experience in 2.4kV‑35kV distribution design and standards (GO‑95, GO‑126, NEC, NESC).
- High emotional intelligence, strong listening, analytical, problem‑solving, teamwork, and communication skills.
- Proven safety record and compliance with WSP health, safety, and conduct policies.
- Preferred: BSEE/BSEET degree, Professional Engineer licensure, 3+ years at WSP, experience leading project teams and supervising personnel.
