As a Senior Platform Engineer within this newly created team you’ll be able to take ownership of key platform areas, shaping how we build and operate infrastructure across the Octopus Energy Group. You’ll design and implement scalable solutions, mentor engineers and collaborate closely with teams to understand their needs and translate them into platform capabilities - from cloud infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines to observability and developer experience.

Our Global Platform Engineering team is responsible for architecting, building, and maintaining the core infrastructure, tooling, and services that enable our engineering teams to deliver at scale safely and reliably.

  • Support incident response, participate in retrospectives, and contribute to improving operational practices
  • Contribute to technical decisions that affect multiple teams, balancing long-term vision with pragmatic delivery
  • Collaborate closely with engineering teams, communicating technical concepts clearly and constructively
  • Proactively identify opportunities to automate, simplify, and scale platform services
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to less experienced engineers, sharing knowledge and best practices
  • Take ownership of key technical areas, influencing design and implementation for platform services used across the group
  • Deliver platform services and improvements through the whole software delivery lifecycle, including coding, peer reviews, testing, and deployments
What you bring

You’ll bring a strong bias towards automation and scale, with a deep understanding of modern cloud infrastructure best practices, balancing pragmatism with long-term thinking. Thriving in an environment that welcomes continuous improvement and new ideas, your communication skills and attention to detail will be indispensable as you turn complex challenges into simple, scalable solutions that strengthen the foundation for all engineering teams.

By combining world-class tech with brilliant humans who care deeply about customers and driving the renewable energy transition, we made it happen and earlier this year, we became Britain’s largest energy supplier.

We would prefer someone who can work in our London office but will consider remote candidates. However, you do need to be able to work in the UK.

  • Great communication skills, working effectively with developers, product managers and other business stakeholders to understand, design and deliver impactful projects and reliability improvements
  • Awareness of security, compliance, or reliability considerations in regulated industries
  • Terraform or a similar infrastructure-as-code tool
  • Experience working in environments where shared platform services support multiple teams or products
  • Experience with a Linux distribution
  • Datadog, or a similar logging/monitoring tool
  • Proficient using AWS; we use a lot of different AWS services and not just the standard few
  • Previous experience working in small, highly-autonomous teams
  • PostgreSQL, or a similar RDBMS
  • Some exposure to data-heavy systems (analytics, telemetry, IoT) and how to build infrastructure to support them
  • Experience working with geographically distributed teams
  • Messaging queues, event-driven async processing or similar technologies - we use RabbitMQ
  • Docker and Kubernetes; we use Amazon EKS in production
  • Python development experience or equivalent
  • Networking and DNS
