The Role: As the Senior Development Chemist, you’ll be the technical lead driving formulation, design, optimisation, and commercialisation of coating systems used on propellers and other demanding marine substrates. This role blends hands-on development with technical leadership, guiding junior chemists, influencing R&D direction, and ensuring coating technologies deliver superior performance in harsh marine environments.
Your work will span primers, pretreatments, epoxies, silicone foul-release systems, and immersion-grade coatings, with a strong focus on developing robust, manufacturable, and innovative solutions.
- Investigating new raw materials, chemistries, and emerging coating innovations.
- Analysing results, troubleshooting failure mechanisms, and driving improvements.
- Supporting pilot batches, manufacturing trials, and commercialisation activities.
- Translating lab-scale formulations into production-ready products, including defining QC parameters.
- Leading formulation design across a range of advanced coating technologies.
- Providing technical leadership, mentorship, and direction to chemists and junior chemists.
- Maintaining high standards of lab safety, organisation, and scientific accuracy.
- Supporting R&D strategy, laboratory planning, and project decision-making.
- Developing and executing experimental plans, optimisation studies, and performance testing.
- Contributing to product documentation, application guidelines, and controlled field trials.

leadership
You, the Candidate: You will be an experienced technical leader with extensive coatings industry knowledge, ideally within marine or protective coatings. You’ll bring deep formulation expertise, strong experimental design capability, and the confidence to independently lead complex R&D projects from concept through to commercialisation. You’ll also be a supportive mentor, an analytical thinker, and someone who enjoys solving challenging material and performance problems.
- Tertiary qualification in Chemistry, Materials Science, or related field.
- Experience with scale-up, QC establishment, and production transfer (preferred).
- Strong communication skills and an ability to influence technical and project outcomes.
- Expertise with epoxies, primers, pretreatments, silicone systems, and corrosion-resistant or immersion-exposed technologies.
- Strong understanding of marine environments, corrosion behaviour, and coating performance on metallic substrates.
- 10+ years’ experience in the coatings industry—marine or protective coatings strongly preferred.
- Excellent formulation, troubleshooting, data interpretation, and technical reporting skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with Operations, Field Technicians, and wider cross-functional teams.
- Proven experience leading complex R&D projects end-to-end.
