As a Principal Engineer, you will be guiding our team to create sustainable multimodal transportation infrastructure in a wide range of contexts from complex roadways and streetscapes in highly urban settings to signature trail projects that highlight and enhance the natural environment. You will assist the Silver Spring Civil Engineering Group Manager and/or the Regional Design Director by independently managing and leading company projects in the Mid-Atlantic region. You'll be at the table with clients and colleagues from a variety of disciplines, delivering projects from concept to construction; including stakeholder outreach and charrettes, developing feasibility studies and concept plans, and preparing construction documents for innovative projects in your home region as well as supporting projects across our North American offices. You will also be participating in business development and project pursuits, and playing a key role in the firm's quality initiatives. In an industry that is constantly changing, you'll be at the forefront of delivering creative solutions to challenging projects.

  • Experience developing construction documents
  • Proficiency in Computer Automated Design (AutoCAD or MicroStation) and design software (Civil 3D, GEOPAK or InRoads)
  • A broad knowledge base in civil engineering, with specific experience in roadway design, drainage design, geometric design, 3D modeling and design of accessible public spaces
  • Experience in preparing transportation and local agency permit documents
  • A bachelor's or master's degree in civil engineering
  • At least 15 years of engineering experience developing construction documents and/or public agency construction administration
  • You enjoy generating and evaluating engineering solutions that can be constructed and maintained
  • Experience in preparing proposals and scope/fees
  • You have strong communication skills, whether written, verbal, or graphical
  • You have experience in Civil - Roadway - Highway design and are interested in moving into active transportation and Complete Streets Design
  • A proven track record of past performance delivering multiple large/complex projects on time and on budget
  • General experience leading multidisciplinary teams, coordinating utility and right-of-way impacts, street lighting, traffic signal, and landscape/hardscape layout
  • You have strong leadership skills and enjoy mentoring junior staff
  • You want to become an expert who is sought after by clients and teaming partners
  • At least 5 years serving in a project and/or design management role
  • You enjoy producing high-quality work products and seeing your projects get built
  • Experience in managing staff
  • You can build relationships, bring enthusiasm to exciting projects, and are detail oriented with strong problem-solving skills.
  • A Professional Engineering license in MD (other Mid-Atlantic states a plus)
  • Experience managing engineering projects in the State of Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic

Work Schedule for a Principal Engineer

We are targeting a salary range of $125,000 to $160,000 for this position. Candidates with exceptional qualifications may fall into a different pay range.

This full-time position typically works a hybrid schedule, with at least two to three days a week in the office. We also provide employees with the flexibility and necessary equipment to work from home 2-3 days per week. The Silver Spring office of Toole Design is our corporate headquarters. We are conveniently located just outside of Washington DC in downtown Silver Spring, close to regional trails and networks, on on-street bike infrastructure, and two blocks from the Silver Spring Metrorail/MARC Station and bus depot. Our beautiful 8th floor suite offers stunning views of DC and surrounding Montgomery County. The office is easily accessed on foot, by bicycle, and via transit.
