The position is for a Mech/Steam/HTHW (Steam Engineer) at HMP The Mount in Hemel Hempstead, offering a salary between £43,177.30 and £46,775.42 per annum on a full‑time permanent contract. The role is within a Category C adult men’s prison and is part of the Ministry of Justice’s facilities maintenance team.
The team works Monday to Friday in a supportive, family‑like environment, collaborating to create a safe and nurturing setting for prisoners, staff, and visitors. Staff members are encouraged to work together like a close‑knit family, fostering mutual support and purpose.
As a Steam Engineer you will work alongside experienced plumbers, electricians, carpenters, painters, cleaners, administrators and other tradespeople, all dedicated to providing a secure environment. Gov Facility Services Limited (GFSL) is a Ministry of Justice owned company. Set up in February 2018 we provide facility maintenance services to 49 prisons across the South of England. We work closely with our client, Her Majesty's Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS), to deliver a range of facility services, including statutory and mandatory planned maintenance, reactive repair, cleaning, stores operation, and Project works. Our core objective is to support HMPPS in the provision of a safe working environment and the maintenance, operation and improvement of prisons. Since setting up the company, we have made significant progress in stabilising and improving the FM services we provide, while developing our core business systems and infrastructure from scratch to support a team of 1300 people and over 200 specialist supplier partners.
