The Rodman is a key member of a survey crew, providing essential support to ensure successful completion of land surveying projects under the direction of the Party Chief. This role involves working outdoors in various weather conditions and terrains.
Rodmen clear brush and obstacles to maintain line of sight, and they carry, set up, and maintain survey equipment such as rods, tripods, and prisms for staking and measurement. They load and unload equipment and supplies, maintain inventory of nails, paint, rods, and flags, and perform tasks like gathering supplies, digging for corners, and cutting lines. Additional duties include locating and identifying monuments, plumbing prisms, measuring distances, cleaning equipment, and other field surveying tasks as assigned.
- Carry and set up rods, tripods, and prisms for staking and measurement.
- Load and unload survey equipment and supplies for job assignments.
- Maintain inventory of survey supplies such as nails, paint, rods, and flags.
- Gather supplies, dig for corners, and cut lines.
- Locate and correctly identify monuments.
- Plumb prisms to ensure accurate measurements.
- Measure distances using chains, tape, or other methods.
- Clean and maintain survey equipment.
- Follow supervisor directions and collaborate with engineering staff.
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions and terrains for extended periods.
- Lift and carry survey equipment up to 35 lb regularly.
