The Security, Policing and Enforcement Directorate (SPE) safeguards TfL's transport network through visible compliance and enforcement across buses, trains, underground, trams, ferries and the taxi and private‑hire sector. Operations Officers provide a reassuring presence, enforce rules, conduct vehicle and ticket checks, and intervene in anti‑social behaviour or violence. The position follows a varied shift pattern that can include nights, weekends and bank holidays and is a full‑time uniformed role based anywhere in Greater London.
This recruitment campaign aims to build a waitlist for permanent Operations Officer positions over the next year. Applicants who have recently completed an assessment for the Operations Officer Days or Nights role, are on the current waitlist, or hold a Special Constable or taxi/private‑hire licence are ineligible. The role does not offer visa sponsorship or immigration advice.
The selection process consists of four stages: online application, online situational judgement test, an assessment centre with competency and scenario‑based interviews, and a job‑related fitness test. Candidates have seven days to complete the online test and must arrange their assessment centre appointment promptly, as slots are limited.
The mandatory fitness test requires passing level 5.4 on a multi‑stage shuttle (bleep) run, demonstrating sufficient aerobic capacity for operational duties. Failure to meet the fitness standard will result in withdrawal from the recruitment process.
Confidentiality is essential; sharing details of the assessment process can lead to immediate withdrawal. Candidates must read the Candidate Charter and Disability Charter, and any reasonable adjustments must be requested at least 48 hours before the assessment.
All successful candidates will undergo police vetting to Non‑Police Personnel Vetting Level 2 with a Counter‑Terrorism Check and must maintain this status, which includes checks on financial history, criminal records, and residency. The vetting process begins before employment starts and is renewed roughly every three years.
Employees receive comprehensive wellbeing support, including trauma‑informed training, an Employee Assistance Programme, and mental‑health resources. A robust support system encourages open communication about challenges encountered on the job.
The role offers a salary of £39,106 rising to £43,373 after one year, a final‑salary pension, free TfL travel, 75 % rail travel reimbursement, 30 days of annual leave plus public holidays, and various retail, health, leisure and travel discounts.
