Traffic Project Engineer

Description

• Conduct traffic engineering analyses (capacity, signal timing, crash analysis, LOS) using tools such as Synchro, VISSIM, SIDRA, and HCS.
• Develop traffic control, signal, and signing/striping plans per MUTCD, AASHTO, and state DOT guidelines.
• Prepare technical reports, traffic impact studies, and documentation for public and agency review.
• Coordinate with DOTs, MPOs, and municipalities on permitting, approvals, and stakeholder engagement.
• Uphold QA/QC processes throughout project phases.
• Stay current on emerging technologies and best practices in traffic operations, safety, and ITS.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including structural, highway, environmental, and civil engineers.
• Provide technical support during project development, permitting, bidding, and construction phases.
• Maintain project schedules, budgets, and deliverables under project manager guidance.
• Conduct site inspections, prepare reports, and liaise with municipal agencies, contractors, and stakeholders.
• Act as a professional ambassador for BETA, cultivating and sustaining client relationships.
• Assist with proposal development and business development initiatives as needed.
• Mentor junior staff and support quality assurance/quality control efforts.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field.
• 5–10 years of experience in traffic studies, signal design, intersection and corridor analysis, traffic modeling/simulation, and traffic control plan development.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license.
• Proficient with AutoCAD, Synchro, and SimTraffic.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Experience with MUTCD, AASHTO, and DOT design requirements.
• Excellent communication and technical writing skills.
• Ability to collect field data and perform asset inspections.
• Ability to lift/move objects up to 40 lb and work in hot or cold weather for extended periods.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
• OSHA certifications (e.g., OSHA 10‑Construction, OSHA 40‑HAZWOPER, OSHA Confined Space Entry).
• Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification.
• IMSA Traffic Inspection Certification.
• Proficiency with VISSIM.
