The Crew Chief I leads a survey crew in daily field activities for RES Solar, transmission and distribution, and pre‑construction projects. This role provides hands‑on surveying support—including construction staking, control point verification, and accurate data collection—while adhering to RES safety and quality standards. The Crew Chief works closely with the Field Coordinator to meet schedule requirements and maintain organized surveying operations.
- Lead and direct Survey Technicians during daily tasks.
- Perform construction staking, topographic surveys, and as‑built data collection with minimal supervision.
- Set, verify, and maintain survey control points.
- Communicate daily workload plans, constraints, and progress to the Field Coordinator.
- Maintain, calibrate, and ready survey equipment for use.
- Conduct routine vehicle and equipment inspections.
- Maintain organized notes, point logs, and daily reports.
- Troubleshoot layout discrepancies and coordinate solutions with management.
- Train and mentor Survey Technicians in field procedures and equipment usage.
- Operate company vehicles safely across all site conditions.
- Support UAV operations for flights, mapping, and field data capture as needed.
- Promote continuous improvement and uphold RES surveying best practices.
- Attend work regularly and punctually as scheduled.
- Comply with Employee Handbook, Code of Conduct, and Company Policies & Procedures.
- Lead by example with a safety and quality‑oriented attitude.
- Practice all required safety and quality standards set by RES.
- Identify and report potential hazards immediately.
- Participate in daily safety meetings and toolbox talks.
- Wear required PPE and ensure equipment is inspected prior to use.
- Fill in for Field Coordinator on POD meetings during rotations.

Safety is the top priority; the Crew Chief follows safe practices, participates in daily safety meetings, and reports hazards immediately. The position also requires at least one year of leadership experience, guiding Survey Technicians and acting as a role model for quality and safety.
Candidates must be proficient with Trimble, SPS, and CHC equipment, able to read plans, and possess strong communication and leadership skills. A minimum of two years of construction surveying experience is required, with familiarity in coordinate systems, UAV operations (Part 107 a plus preferred), and basic AutoCAD/TBC knowledge considered a plus.
- Minimum one year of experience leading others required.
- Proficient with Trimble, SPS, and CHC equipment and data collectors.
- Read plans, understand layouts, and adapt to site conditions.
- Demonstrate strong communication and leadership skills.
- Knowledge of coordinate systems, site control, and survey file types.
- UAV operations proficiency preferred (Part 107 a plus).
- At least two years of construction surveying experience.
- Less than one year of AutoCAD & TBC experience preferred.
- Physical demands include occasional lifting, climbing, crouching, and frequent standing and walking.
- Exposure to extreme temperatures, humidity, noise, hazards, and vibration.
- Domestic travel required 76‑100% of time.
