HVAC Design Engineer

Description

The Mechanical Engineer focuses on the design and engineering of HVAC and mechanical utilities for buildings. Typical tasks and deliverables include load calculations, utility assessments, energy modeling, design reports, code evaluations, plans, P&IDs, schedules, installation details, equipment and system selection and specification, and coordination with manufacturers and trade partners. Tasks also include utilizing BIM, computer‑aided drafting, and engineering calculations, under the direction of a senior engineer, across all design phases and construction administration.

• Develop design and construction drawing packages and edit construction specifications on basic projects with oversight.
• Participate in squad checks and ensure quality deliverables.
• Design basic mechanical systems (airside, chilled water, condenser water, heating hot water, steam, natural gas, compressed air) in compliance with code requirements and coordinate with other disciplines.
• Perform envelope, load, and pressure drop calculations to confirm project requirements are met.
• Size mechanical equipment, ductwork, and piping; develop system schematics.
• Participate in basic project system design programming and master planning with support from senior engineers.
• Support construction activities including RFI responses, submittal reviews, punch‑list development, and progress reports.
• Conduct and lead field surveys of existing conditions and support field reporting.
• Build parametric workflows using Dynamo, Grasshopper, or Rhino within Revit.
• Coordinate effectively across internal and external project teams.
• Coordinate with construction trade partners, vendors, and manufacturers.

Requirements

• Hold an ABET‑accredited Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering with a mechanical focus.
• Bring at least 3 years of relevant experience.
• Demonstrate proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD.
• Possess basic experience performing engineering calculations and developing HVAC, mechanical utility, and piping system designs.
• Complete the Fundamentals of Engineering exam (preferred).
• Proficient in Microsoft Office suite and Bluebeam Revu (preferred).
• Hold LEED, WELL, or other sustainable design accreditation or have sustainable design experience (preferred).
• Experience in Life Sciences (pharma, biotech, laboratory) or Food & Beverage industries (preferred).
• Basic familiarity with mechanical, plumbing, fire, and building codes.
• Basic familiarity with industry standards such as ASHRAE, SMACNA, ISPE, FDA, ISO, NFPA, OSHA.
• Basic plumbing design experience.
