Construction Inspectors - Technicians _ road/bridge projects

Description

• Works independently on broad projects under a department manager and may manage a team.
• Perform construction inspection services for earthwork, concrete, asphalt, and utilities on NCDOT, municipal, and private projects.
• Conduct field testing and observations for roadway/bridge projects, soils, concrete, and asphalt.
• Inspect construction activities such as concrete pours, rebar placement, and pipe replacements, and report findings.
• Sample and test construction materials, compute formulas, plot data, and create simple graphs.
• Assist engineers during soil and material investigations.
• Ensure quality control/assurance and verification comply with test methods, specifications, and contract documents.
• Verify plan quantities and calculations against bid plans.
• Prepare and maintain project records and reports; notify contractors or engineers of non‑conforming work.

Requirements

The position blends field, laboratory, and office work, operates independently under a department manager, and may involve managing a team of direct reports. Projects are centered in the south‑central NC region with frequent travel, and a vehicle stipend or company vehicle is provided. Prior NCDOT experience and certifications are a strong plus.

• Knowledge of engineering, construction, testing, and inspection principles.
• Experience with materials testing and standard observation methods.
• Ability to perform quality‑control initiatives and performance testing.
• Strong field reporting, writing, and record‑keeping skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication.
• Ability to work in adverse weather and provide independent status updates.
• Quality‑mindset and client focus.
• Minimum 2 years construction inspection and testing experience on NCDOT projects.
• Familiarity with highway construction specifications and field work.
• Experience with concrete, asphalt, earthwork, and utility inspection/testing.
• Experience with field and laboratory testing of soil, concrete, asphalt, aggregate, masonry, and structural steel.
• Preferred certifications: ACI Grade I, DOT Asphalt Tech, NICET Level II Soils, ICC Special Inspections, CWI/NDT – not required.
• Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
