The OSP Engineer role supports telecommunications infrastructure projects by designing, planning, and implementing outside plant (OSP) projects for copper and fiber networks, requiring strong engineering, permitting, construction coordination, budget management, and compliance expertise.
The position involves engineering and design tasks such as creating facility designs, preparing drawings and calculations, conducting field measurements, and monitoring budgets and quality; it also includes permitting, field coordination with municipal officials and utilities, project and construction support, and administrative duties.
- Design and plan copper and fiber OSP facilities (aerial, buried, conduit).
- Prepare engineering drawings, loop loss calculations, and switch serving area designs.
- Conduct field measurements for poles, conduits, and buried utilities.
- Develop and monitor project budgets, perform job inspections for quality.
- Assemble and submit permit packages to local, state, and federal agencies.
- Coordinate with municipal officials and utility companies to avoid project delays.
- Update FROGS, Varasset, and SiteTracker tools as required.
- Work with SSP contractors to ensure timely, budget‑conscious project completion.
- Support make‑ready work, joint‑use coordination, and site surveys for cell towers and plant repairs.
- Resolve plant damage requests, cable count changes, and other network service needs.
- Maintain engineering records, process documentation, and draft correspondence.

Candidates should have 3–5+ years of hands‑on copper and fiber network engineering experience, at least five years in network or OSP work, strong project management skills, proficiency with Frontier tools (FROGS, Varasset, SiteTracker), and the ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders; they must reside within an hour of Freeport, IL and be willing to travel locally.
- 3–5+ years hands‑on copper and fiber optic network engineering experience.
- Minimum 5 years in network engineering or OSP‑related work, including permitting.
- Strong project management and organizational abilities.
- Proficiency with Frontier tools: FROGS, Varasset, SiteTracker.
- Excellent communication with municipal officials, utilities, contractors, and cross‑functional teams.
- In‑depth knowledge of permitting procedures and OSP construction practices.
- Ability to travel locally; residence within 1 hour of Freeport, IL.
