The role includes supervisory responsibilities, directing the activities of the assigned team and advising less experienced subcontract personnel unless operating independently. A four‑year degree in Business Administration or related field is typical, though 12–15 years of equivalent construction subcontracting experience may substitute for formal education.
Typical duties involve developing project subcontracting plans, early‑planning documents, and bid/inquiry packages; clarifying scope and material requirements with engineering and construction management; negotiating contracts, change orders, and claim settlements; managing subcontract schedules and client presentations; and ensuring accurate cost forecasting and progress tracking. The incumbent also oversees safety, quality, productivity, and cost aspects of subcontractor work, mentors the subcontract management team, conducts annual performance reviews, and supports system turnover processes.
Candidates must have at least ten years of subcontracting experience, strong proficiency with Microsoft Office, and deep knowledge of project subcontracting plans and early‑planning documentation. Required skills include consulting with engineering and construction teams, preparing bid packages, evaluating proposals, negotiating change requests and claims, reviewing and approving subcontract documents, and managing cost estimating data. Additional expertise involves supplier qualification, maintaining supplier databases, overseeing safety, quality, productivity, and cost performance, and mentoring junior staff throughout the cradle‑to‑grave subcontract lifecycle.
