  • Actively supports laboratory certifications/accreditations and renewals.
  • Participates in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
  • Directs and schedules the performance of numerous tests both in the lab and in the field of a variety of construction materials and products such as soils, aggregates, and consumer products to ensure that materials tested conform to client and project specifications.
  • Develops, fosters, and maintains client relationships. Pursues repeat or follow-up work with current clients. Collaborates with Department and Practice leadership to respond to new business opportunities, including preparing materials testing proposals.
  • Adheres to corporate policies and procedures, Practice and Department procedures, and ensures consistent application and team member compliance.
  • Complies with all safety policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Performs limited personnel functions, including performance management feedback, mentoring, employee development, and reinforcing a positive work environment. Plans and schedules work for team members, ensuring the appropriate and effective distribution of assignments, labor, and equipment for efficient performance of duties. Reviews and approves timesheets and time off requests for accuracy and completeness.
  • Trains and reviews specialists’ and lab technicians’ work to ensure compliance with all testing and safety procedures.
  • Ensures validity of test results and that testing turnaround schedules are achieved.
  • Coordinates equipment maintenance and calibrations.
  • Coordinates with Department leadership and Financial Services regarding project invoicing and collections.

  • Proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, specifically Microsoft Office.
  • Mathematical skills: ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to apply concepts to practical situations.
  • ACI Aggregates Testing Certification
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Ability to stand and walk over uneven surfaces.
  • Moderate physical activity performing somewhat strenuous daily activities of a primarily technical nature.
  • Knowledge of regulatory agencies and various municipalities’ requirements.
  • High school diploma or general education diploma (GED).
  • ODOT Asphalt, Concrete, Soils and Aggregates Certification
  • Ability to see clearly 20 feet or more; ability to identify and distinguish colors; ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point (peripheral vision); three-dimensional vision with ability to judge distances and spatial relationships (depth perception); ability to adjust focus.
  • Remote connectivity device (e.g., smart phone, tablet, etc.) with data plan sufficient for company requirements, including multi-factor authentication, time and mileage tracking, expense reimbursement, e-mail, and virtual communications.
  • Reasoning skills: ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Organizational skills: ability to prioritize, organize and delegate tasks and assignments; ability to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • ACI Concrete Field and Laboratory Testing Certification
  • Ability to stand and/or walk for extended periods of time.
  • Exposed to machinery with moving parts
  • Extensive knowledge of AASHTO and ASTM procedures.
  • Knowledge of how test results are determined, the ability to interpret them, and understanding of cause and effect when comparing.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to reach/handle items, work with the fingers, and perceive attributes of objects and materials.
  • Ten years’ experience in the construction materials testing field and five years’ experience in a lab management role.
  • Communication proficiency
  • Ability to occasionally bend, crouch or stoop.
  • English language skills: ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and the public.
  • Problem solving/analysis
  • Ability to lift and move up to 10 pounds frequently, up to 25 pounds occasionally, and up to 50 pounds as needed.
  • Requires use of personal protective equipment

  • Variable work hours as projects dictate (occasional 10- to 12-hour days and/or weekends).
  • Fixed schedule of 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, including required core hours.
