  • Attends (and may conduct) progress meetings to discuss status and problems
  • Performs testing of construction materials (concrete, asphalt, soils, etc.) as required by owners specifications
  • Reports maintenance problems occurring at project site to supervisor and collaborates to resolve issues
  • Supports work of Project Managers throughout the course of project cycle
  • Writes staff reports, letters, and reports on construction activities as needed
  • Records, measures, and verifies quantities
  • Maintains daily logs and field books (electronic or hardcopy) of construction progress, site visitors, problems and resolutions
  • May create newsletters showing project status and progress
  • Occasionally required to perform testing procedures in the field which may include moving about for several hours at a time, ascending/descending a ladder, and/or properly positioning self around barriers
  • Works to meet and exceed client needs throughout project
  • Apprises owner of project progress and problems
  • Inspects roadway materials used by the contractor (reviewing confirmation that all materials conform to owner specifications)
  • Engages in self-education and training in order to keep up with current industry trends and changes
  • Directs work and trains CEI Technician I and other field inspection staff as needed
  • Responds to client suggestions and complaints
  • Creates and approves contract change orders based on field modifications
  • Consults with supervisor to determine project details, such as plan preparation, acceptance testing, and evaluation of field conditions
  • Frequently use a computer for several hours at a time
  • Performs responsibilities consistent with ethical engineering standards in the company handbook
  • Reviews Request for Payments and Invoices, approval, sign-off
  • May work near moving mechanical parts and heavy equipment

  • Judgement and Decision-Making Skills – ability to make reasoned judgments that are logical and well thought out; constructively questioning and analyzing information in order to make the best conclusion
  • Organizational Skills – can marshal resources (people, funding, material, support, etc.) to get things done; can orchestrate multiple activities at once to accomplish goals; uses resources effectively and efficiently; arranges information and files in a useful manner
  • Technical school graduate and at least two years of experience in building construction
  • Detail-Oriented – ability to achieve accuracy and thoroughness when accomplishing a task; pays attention to details and is able to understand the cause of a certain outcome
  • Ability to transport plans and testing equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Basic knowledge of state and/or local construction and building guidelines
  • Requires the ability to communicate via in-person, phone, and email
  • Possession of a valid state issued Driver's License and required auto insurance
  • Basic knowledge and understand of Microsoft office Suite (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • Interpersonal Skills – ability to interact positively and work effectively with others
  • Basic Computer Skills – ability to use computers and related technology efficiently, with a range of skills covering levels from elementary use to intermediate problems
  • Speech Clarity – ability to speak clearly and in a common language so that others can understand you
  • Knowledge and experience conducting construction bridge inspections of the foundation, substructure and superstructure is preferred
  • Knowledge of DOT Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, construction regulations, and statutes regarding generally accepted construction and trade practices preferred
  • Comprehension – ability to understand information, ideas, and direction presented in writing and/or verbally communicated
  • Due to the nature of work being completed, as noted in the essential functions above, and the regular use of an SSR provided truck, constant and vigilant awareness of all roadway safety hazards and self monitoring of safe practices while operating company owned vehicles. Vehicles are to only be used for SSR related business.
  • OSHA 10-Hour Construction certification and necessary testing certifications (concrete, asphalt, soils, etc.)
  • High School diploma or equivalent and four years of experience in building construction
  • Must be able to make deliveries and visit construction sites in a vehicle
  • Written Communication Skills – ability to clearly deliver a message through written words using correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation
  • Requires vision abilities with the capability of using testing equipment and detecting safety/warning signs on a construction site
  • Technical Writing Skills – skilled in the area of summarizing or explaining technical information in a clear, concise, and accurate way, communicating the point intended
  • May be exposed to various weather conditions and/or extreme temperatures, hot or cold, on a construction site
