Interior Designer

Description

The designer will develop space plans and interior architectural layouts for schools, select furnishings and finishes, and create detailed cost estimates. They will review construction documents and conduct site visits to ensure compliance with safety, accessibility, environmental and sustainability standards. The role also includes coordinating procurement, supervising logistics, preparing specifications, and producing interior drawings and visual aids.

• Confer with clients to assess furniture, fixtures, and equipment needs and develop budget‑compliant solutions.
• Create space plans, interior layouts, and select furnishings and finishes for educational facilities.
• Prepare detailed furniture and equipment cost estimates and design specifications.
• Review construction documents and conduct site visits to verify safety, code compliance, accessibility, and sustainability criteria.
• Coordinate and supervise procurement, logistics, and installation of furniture and equipment to meet project timelines and budgets.
• Develop and manage orders, contracts, and vendor relationships for custom and standard products.
• Produce interior drawings, visual aids, and comprehensive reports for stakeholder review and approval.
• Maintain updated inventories of furniture, equipment, manufacturers, and vendors.
• Apply interior design principles, color theory, and space‑planning techniques in project execution.
• Utilize AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office for drafting, scheduling, and data processing.
• Ensure compliance with building codes, ADA, fire and life safety regulations.
• Collaborate with facilities staff, school administrators, and project teams to achieve project objectives.

Requirements

Candidates must have at least eight years of full‑time professional experience in interior design, space planning, and furniture/equipment coordination, with a preference for experience in public‑agency or school construction projects. A bachelor’s degree in interior design, architecture or a related field is required, or equivalent coursework (40 semester units) plus two additional years of experience.

Required knowledge and skills include interior design principles, furniture and equipment specification, color theory, budgeting, scheduling, and procurement processes. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, Bluebeam and Revit, as well as familiarity with building codes, ADA, fire and life safety regulations, is essential. Strong oral and written communication, presentation abilities, and teamwork with facilities staff and administrators are also needed.
