Description

Technician 1 employees perform service construction and repair duties, operate mechanical equipment such as trenchers and compressors, and install or adjust domestic and commercial gas appliances. They also install range lines, service regulators, meter manifolds, and hot‑water heaters, while assisting higher‑classification technicians and maintaining accurate work records. Safety tasks include bracing and barricading trenches, leading small crews, and responding to leak complaints.

Requirements

The position requires working outdoors in varying weather conditions and involves direct customer service interactions. Physical demands include lifting equipment up to 95 lb, climbing in excavation holes, and using hand tools with up to 40 lb of force.

• High School Diploma or equivalent (GED)
• Must have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record (eight points or less)
• Successful candidate(s) must pass the DOT Drug Test, DOT Physical, and respirator fit test
• Must pass the required testing
• Must pass the required training
• Successful candidate(s) must complete a Background Check
• Must successfully pass all pre‑employment assessments
• Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Group A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL‑A) with Air Brake Endorsement; if not held, obtain a Temporary Permit during pre‑hire
• Must be certified to wear self‑contained breathing apparatus
• Must be willing and able to work odd shifts, on‑call, emergency assignments, and overtime per the collective bargaining agreement
• Must be able to lift and move equipment weighing approximately 95 lb (jackhammer)
• Must be able to climb in and out of excavation holes
• Must be able to communicate both verbally and in writing
• Must be able to use a variety of hand tools requiring upper‑body forces up to 40 lb
• Experience in Natural Gas Operations
• Knowledge of OSHA regulations and pipeline safety regulations
• Excavation or construction experience
• HVAC experience or certification
• Customer Service experience

Benefits

The position requires a gas test, has one opening, and applications must be submitted no later than January 21, 2026. The job is located in Traverse City with a pay range of $24.00 to $46.49 per hour. This role is represented by Local 799c International Chemical Workers Union Council bargaining unit.
