Description

In this position, the accountant will manage the collection, recording, and allocation of project costs and revenue, calculate accurate project profit and loss, and communicate financial performance to management. Responsibilities cover the full lifecycle of project accounting—from creating project accounts in Oracle and tracking budgets, to validating invoicing, close‑out, and reconciling payables and receivables. The role also includes detailed accounting for contracts and billing events, partnering with project managers to establish and adjust budgets, generating financial reports, authorizing account access, and maintaining quality‑controlled financial records using Oracle and spreadsheets.

• Create and maintain project accounts in Oracle, track budgets, validate invoicing, and reconcile payables and receivables.
• Perform detailed accounting for contracts, billing events, and transaction exceptions on medium‑complexity projects.
• Partner with project managers to establish, update, and adjust project budgets in response to contract modifications.
• Generate and evaluate financial reports, escalating labor breakage or variances to project managers as needed.
• Authorize access to project accounts and oversee expense transfers in compliance with accounting policies.
• Maintain quality‑controlled financial records using Oracle, spreadsheets, and specialized accounting software.
• Investigate project variances, prepare variance reports, and recommend corrective actions to management.
• Verify contract and change order terms, interpret compensation methods, and assess purchase order and subcontractor conditions.
• Ensure draft invoices align with contract requirements, obtain necessary approvals, and submit final invoices to clients.
• Evaluate subconsultant invoices for accuracy, manage purchase orders, and coordinate payment requests with accounts payable.
• Track unpaid contract billings, follow up on delinquent receivables, and respond to client requests for detailed expense information.
• Attend project meetings to communicate financial status, identify problem projects, and document action items.
• Prepare government reports and compile documentation for internal and external auditors as required.
• Interact professionally with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients while adhering to ethical and conduct standards.

Requirements

The ideal candidate holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience) and has three to five years of post‑education experience in project accounting, contracts, and change management. They possess strong analytical judgment, effective communication skills, and the ability to coordinate with diverse stakeholders. Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, and advanced Excel functions (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, formulas) is required, along with critical‑thinking and problem‑solving abilities. Familiarity with WSP’s Project Delivery Handbook, safety policies, and a willingness to work beyond typical hours and travel occasionally are also essential.

Compensation ranges from $65,300 to $111,980 (or $65,300 to $105,160 in Colorado) and may vary based on experience, education, and location.
