  • Perform semiskilled and skilled duties as a facilities maintenance mechanic, which includes installation and repair of facilities related equipment, fixtures and furnishings.
  • May be required to work during emergency conditions.
  • May be required to operate heavy equipment to include but not limited to backhoes at treatment plants.
  • Operate powered equipment required in tasks that may include forklift, pressure cleaners, floor cleaners, drills, saws and other equipment as may be necessary.
  • May be required to operate crane trucks or vactor truck.
  • Performs carpentry tasks such as drywall installation and repair, interior and exterior painting, masonry tasks and other building maintenance related trades.
  • Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward, or outward.
  • Supervise personnel for satisfactory task completion.
  • Demonstrate and apply independent judgment and discretion in setting job priorities and timely task completion.
  • Performs preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance on equipment and facilities.
  • Frequently positions self to move, traverse and lift up to 50 lbs to perform required work. Objects greater than 50 lbs require a two-person operation.
  • May be required to learn and utilize software relating to various machines.
  • May be required to participate in Intra/Inter Departmental cross training.
  • Responsible for monitoring the building’s automation system to include HVAC, Fire Control and Security systems as well as providing site security while on duty.
  • Performs preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance activities on plant equipment and facilities and equipment such as: HVAC, plumbing, lighting/electrical, office furnishings, grounds keeping, and custodial.
  • Performs general maintenance and repair to facilities and associated equipment such as faucets, valves, switches, plugs, hand tools and gas-powered equipment.
  • Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul, or tug objects in a sustained motion. On occasion this can require up to 50 lbs of force. Objects greater than 50 lbs require a two-person operation.
  • May be required to work in emergency conditions.
  • Accurately document and maintain records.
  • May be required to perform the duties of the Maintenance Supervisor in their absence.
  • Performs routine tasks such as general facility maintenance.
  • Assembles and disassembles modular furniture.
  • Performs semi-skilled duties of moderate difficulty to include but not limited to troubleshooting, repair, installation and maintenance of buildings such as plumbing and lighting fixtures, doors, windows and other related movable or stationary building structures and/or equipment.
  • Assist with more difficult assignments such as maintenance and troubleshooting of complex facilities related equipment and procedures.

  • Ability to express and receive detailed information through oral communication and make fine distinction in sound, such as when making fine adjustments on machine parts.

  • This is an entry position. Associate is required to successfully complete the Charleston Water System Tradesworker Progression Program, which may include formal classroom training, online training, on-the-job training, independent learning, work assignments and skills demonstration tests. All training completions have effective deadlines which must be met. Failure to qualify on the training requirements may result in termination.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to altered priorities and positive cooperation with management in completion of projects.
  • Skilled in the use and upkeep of tools and equipment commonly employed in the trade.
  • Subject to noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. Hearing Protection Required
  • Prior work record indicating dependability and conscientiousness.
  • Performance must comply with all CWS policies and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of the use and upkeep of tools, equipment, and machinery of assigned trades areas.
  • Ability to observe repairs and field work in progress.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Job performance must conform to all CWS policies and procedures.
  • Constantly positions self to move, traverse for long distances as necessary to perform required work. Must be able to move about extensively to make inspections of treatment plant with varied topography and features. Ability to traverse on uneven ground while safely maneuvering equipment on wheels.
  • Valid South Carolina Driver's License required.
  • Familiarity with safe handling practices for hazardous materials.
  • Have the ability to weld and burn with moderate proficiency.
  • Ability to read blueprints and technical manuals to accomplish specific criteria on job assignments.
  • Ability to communicate verbal instructions quickly, loudly, and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Depending on qualifications, candidate may be required to complete an abbreviated track of the Tradesworker Progression Program. Failure to complete this requirement may result in termination.
  • OSHA and Departmental safety training as required.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred. Two (2) years experience in maintenance repair or equivalent education in the designated trades area.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in writing, verbally and with a 2-way radio, to include comprehension of complex oral and written instruction.
  • Ability to use a multi-meter to measure or troubleshoot electrical circuits.
  • Regular attendance is required.
  • Routinely ascend/descend ladders, stairs and ramps as high as thirteen (13) stories at Plum Island and three (3) stories at Hanahan. Ability to work at elevated height levels as needed to perform various task.
  • Three (3) years’ experience in maintenance repair or equivalent education in the designated trades area. High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Ability to reach, pull, handle documents, tools and equipment as required to perform routine tasks. Must be able to turn valve operator wheels and chain mechanisms.
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A required within 6 months of hire.
  • Constantly works in internal / external environmental conditions. Subject to atmospheric conditions of one or more of the following that affect the respiratory system or skin: Fumes (paint), odors, dusts, gases, etc. Personnel Protective Equipment Required.
  • Must have ability to accurately document and keep records.
  • Ability to work independently of others.
  • Must be able to maneuver large valve operator wheels and chain mechanisms.
  • Must be able to wear Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) as defined in the Job Safety Analysis (JSA) to perform the required essential functions.
  • Worker may be required to wear a respirator and/or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
  • Specific knowledge of CWS Environmental Management System policy and procedures.
  • Ability to operate and maintain motor vehicles.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred. Two (2) years’ experience in maintenance repair or equivalent education in the designated trades area.
  • ISO 14001 standards for department and company.
  • Successful completion of Tradesworker I Progression Program.
  • Occasionally positions self to use up to 50 lbs of force and/or up to 20 lbs of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs of force constantly to move objects.
  • Job performance must conform to all CWS Policies and procedures.
  • Ability to distinguish colors in the color spectrum; such as reading color codes on resistor.
  • Ability to observe and comprehend computer screens and software to generate reports, specifications, memos, and letters.
  • HAZMAT training preferred.
  • Ability to navigate restricted spaces such as chemical pits, spiral stairwell, etc as needed to perform required job functions.
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A desirable for Facilities.
  • Standard Operating Instruction (SOI) per department requirements.
  • Subject to vibrations. Exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities of whole body.
  • Ability to read blueprints and drawings.
  • Required to work with chemicals used in water and wastewater treatment processes.
