The carpenter is responsible for constructing, erecting, installing, and repairing structures and fixtures made of wood, plywood, wallboard, and other materials using both hand and power tools. All work must comply with local building codes and OSHA regulations. The carpenter reports directly to the foreman or superintendent.
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, and schedules may vary with weather conditions. Overtime may be necessary and is compensated at time‑and‑half for any hours over 40 in a week. Employees must supply their own hand tools and maintain punctual attendance.
Key duties involve studying blueprints to determine material requirements, laying out, cutting, and assembling components, verifying the accuracy of structures, and setting them in place with necessary adjustments. The carpenter must ensure precision using standard carpentry tools and adhere to punctuality and tool maintenance expectations.
Candidates must have at least a 10th‑grade education, with a high school diploma and apprenticeship certification preferred. A minimum of four years of construction experience focused on carpentry is required, and knowledge of blueprints, sketches, and building plans is essential. Physical abilities include lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders, and working at various heights, while mental skills involve math comprehension and clear English communication.
Performance is measured by accurate blueprint reading, proper material selection, strict adherence to foreman directions, and consistent rechecking of work for accuracy. Demonstrating advanced carpentry skills, making timely adjustments, and maintaining regular attendance and punctuality are also critical evaluation criteria.
