The Groundman role is an entry-level position that supports the construction, repair, and maintenance of overhead electrical distribution systems for the nation’s power grid. Team members assist in building, repairing, and keeping these systems operational, providing a foundation for a rewarding career in the utility industry.
Groundmen perform a range of duties on energized and de‑energized lines, including inspecting PPE, stringing overhead wire, setting poles and anchors, and assisting with the installation of transformers, lightning arrestors, cutouts, cross‑arms, insulators, switches, and switchgear. They also replace fuses, clear faulted circuits, check voltages, maintain company vehicles and tools, and follow proper radio, rigging, and knot‑tying procedures while adhering to safety distances and grounding requirements.
The job requires regular physical effort, including standing, walking, climbing wood or steel structures, lifting more than 50 lb, and performing tasks such as stooping, kneeling, or crawling. Workers must have good vision (close, distance, color, peripheral, depth) and be able to hear and talk in noisy, outdoor environments that can expose them to fumes, vibration, and extreme weather conditions.
Applicants must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License permit within 60 days, read and write effectively, travel long distances on short notice, and work extended periods at various locations. The role also demands willingness to work overtime, weekends, and holidays, as well as the ability to lift over 50 lb and perform rigorous physical labor.
