Building Inspector I (FT - On-Site)

Description

• Perform field inspections of residential and limited commercial structures at various construction stages.
• Investigate and report apparent code violations.
• Provide code interpretation to clients, building professionals, and the public.
• Prioritize and resolve inspection‑related problems.
• Read and interpret building plans, specifications, and applicable codes.
• Detect deviations from plans or standard construction practices.
• Maintain accurate paper and electronic records.
• Handle multiple tasks simultaneously while ensuring detail accuracy amid interruptions.
• Work effectively with government entities, contractors, and private clients.
• Follow oral and written directions and perform additional related duties as required.
• Travel to client or job sites and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Occasionally work in elevated, noisy, or dark environments.
• Sit at a computer for extended periods when needed.
• Operate in a fast‑paced environment with deadlines and multiple projects; occasional overtime may be required.

Requirements

Reporting to the Building Official or Building Inspector Supervisor, the Building Inspector conducts field inspections of residential and limited commercial structures at various stages of construction. The role requires knowledge of building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and other relevant codes, as well as the ability to read and understand construction plans and specifications.

The position demands extensive physical activity, including standing, bending, climbing, and lifting up to 35 lb, and may involve work in all weather conditions, elevated or noisy sites. Travel to client or job sites is required, and occasional overtime may be needed to meet project deadlines.

• Hold an ICC Building Inspector certification or one ICC trade‑specific certification (plumbing, electrical, or mechanical) with all licenses maintained.
• Minimum 1 year of building‑inspector experience (private or public) or 3 years of construction experience.
• Possess a high school diploma or GED.
• Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Maintain a valid California Class C driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
• Require extensive physical exertion, including standing, bending, stooping, reaching, crouching, climbing, and lifting up to 35 lb.
