Job duties include locating underground utilities for clients and property owners based on 811 tickets, using utility maps, as‑built civil engineering drawings, GIS data, and various electronic locating equipment. Locators mark utilities with flags or paint, prepare reports, forms, and memos, take photographs for each ticket, and investigate damage to utilities, documenting findings. The role also requires using a cell‑phone app to record marks and generate all required documentation, and participating in an on‑call rotation.
The position is titled NORTHERN LIGHTS UTILITY LOCATOR, classified as Full‑Time employee status. Candidates must have a minimum of two years of locator experience.
Requirements include knowledge of best locate practices, 811 law, and the ability to read utility maps and civil drawings. Candidates must maintain equipment and vehicle cleanliness (tobacco‑free), operate small‑ to medium‑sized equipment, follow written and oral instructions, complete paperwork, and communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and the public. Additional expectations are attention to detail, ability to work in all weather conditions, willingness to travel over 75% of the time, strong troubleshooting skills, passing a drug screen, possessing a valid driver’s license with DOT physical certification, and being available for varying schedules, overtime, and regular attendance.
