Associate Principal - Sustainability (Architectural)

Description

The jobholder oversees the sustainability certification of design and construction projects, ensuring adherence to local and international sustainability standards. S/He leads the delivery of sustainability training and awareness sessions to K&A design teams and staff, increasing K&A’s engineers’ readiness and preparation for sustainability rating (e.g., LEED) certification exams. The jobholder is also expected to provide assistance and support to engineering design teams with respect to green building engineering and design, including LEED / ESTIDAMA consulting, design, and construction strategies. S/He is expected to lead the project teams for the delivery of multiple sustainability projects of various scales.

• Support the Director - Sustainability in identifying, suggesting, and designing sustainability workshops, training courses, and course content for internal and external counterparts, as needed
• Monitor energy ratings compared to key KPIs to ensure certification (e.g., LEED) as needed
• Recommend staffing of sustainability engineers to projects as per project scope and client requirements, in coordination with the Senior Manager - Sustainability
• Oversee the development of sustainability options for new buildings and existing structures
• Present project findings to external and internal K&A client counterparts to obtain comments and approvals on findings
• Review building structure and MEP / HVAC systems and operations to certify adherence of Buildings and Structures to environmental KPIs and targets
• Conduct energy audits on buildings in coordination with contractors and site teams
• Guide financial analysis to assess the financial feasibility of Sustainability options, including life cycle costs and Returns on Investment
• Ensure client satisfaction with the sustainability services, as required by project scopes and clients’ requirements
• Ensure the delivery of sustainability projects on time and on budget
• Support the delivery of sustainability awareness sessions to K&A design teams and staff, in coordination with the Senior Manager - Sustainability
• Coordinate with / support various internal and external team members, including energy modelers, MEP, civil engineers, general contractor, etc.
• Ensure provision of high-quality sustainability services to internal counterparts in the firm
• Ensure commissioning team chargeability is optimized
• Participate in organizing and delivering sustainability workshops for internal and external counterparts in coordination with the Senior Manager - Sustainability
• Effectively communicate environmental certification program requirements and progress to project teams
• Manage the development of sustainability models and calculations, including energy optimization, carbon analysis, daylight and shading simulations, glare and reflectivity modeling, microclimate analysis, etc.
• Implement corporate policies and procedures
• Lead sustainability charrettes and/or LEED meetings, and interact with clients as the primary project contact for the sustainability / LEED / Estidama scope of work
• Support the Director - Sustainability with the development of sustainability projects, schedule baselines, scope baselines, man-hour allocation, and project budgets before project initiation
• Lead technical analysis in calculations and research as needed to support proof of concept, energy optimization, carbon analysis, daylight and shading design, simulations, water balance modeling, materials recommendations, and drawing and specification review
• Assist design teams with sustainable design strategies and technologies for buildings and sites
• Support the Director - Sustainability with the development of proposals for sustainability services
• Contact, obtain quotations, and recommend external specialty suppliers for sustainability proposals, as needed
• Develop sustainability projects, delivery methodologies, and frameworks
• Provide input to the Director - Sustainability for the development of the Sector’s strategic and business plans
• Review RfPs and define project scopes, capacity, and capability required to deliver projects, man-hour estimates, outsourcing needs, and estimated project delivery costs during the sustainability proposal development stages
• Oversee entire LEED / Estidama certification documentation process
• Develop project progress reports and monitor project progress against schedule and budget
• Ensure responsibilities are fulfilled with a high quality and in a cost-effective manner
• Develop sustainability reports, drawings, and findings and present to clients, as needed
• Support the Director - Sustainability with the management of client relations, including the management and response to client inquiries on technical and contractual issues
• Maintain and update a repository of relevant regional sustainability-related regulations, codes, and programs (e.g. ESTIDAMA)

Requirements

• Present in-depth knowledge of LEED / Estidama certification programs and specific knowledge of other green building certification programs such as GSAS, Living Building Challenge (LBC), and Passive House
• Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
• Sustainability rating certification (LEED-AP (BD+C) or other specialty, PQP, etc.)
• Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and other 3D software
• 12+ years of experience in the engineering industry in a top-tier/multinational engineering consultancy firm
• Strong experience with sustainability and environmental design, and management
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
• Knowledge of the Architecture, Engineering, and Planning Industry, particularly related to the sustainability field
• PMP certification
• Master’s Degree in Sustainability / Energy Engineering
• Ability to elicit cooperation from a wide variety of stakeholders, including senior management and various departments
• Bachelor’s Degree in Architectural Engineering
• Ability to review energy modeling analysis reports
• Energy modeling experience a plus, particularly IES / eQuest
• Proficiency in spoken and written English; Arabic is an advantage
• 12+ years of industry experience in the engineering industry
