We are seeking a Principal Engineer – HV Substations (UK) to lead technical delivery on large‑scale infrastructure. The role involves driving substation design discussions, coordinating multidisciplinary teams, managing scope and quality, and ensuring safe‑by‑design practices while mentoring junior staff.
- Lead substation technical discussions with clients and multidisciplinary teams to define scope and ensure delivery.
- Oversee technical delivery by coordinating engineering teams, monitoring progress, and quality checking deliverables before client issue.
- Apply substation project/asset life‑cycle knowledge to successfully deliver designs.
- Collaborate with project management to produce resourcing forecasts and programme plans.
- Build and maintain client relationships with a client‑oriented delivery mindset.
- Drive a safety‑in‑design ethos across all project activities.
- Mentor and develop junior staff to enhance team capability over the medium and long term.

The successful candidate will have consultancy, contractor or utility experience in the energy sector, with a track record of designing HV plant from concept to detailed design. Knowledge of AC HV infrastructure, AIS/GIS equipment, National Grid standards, and multi‑discipline proposal development is essential, and CDAE/LCDAE approval is preferred.
- Demonstrate commercial awareness in proposal development, cost monitoring, and opportunity identification.
- Consultancy, contractor or utility experience in the UK/Ireland energy sector, preferably with National Grid, SHET, SSE, or SPT.
- Proven design experience of HV infrastructure at concept, FEED and detailed design stages.
- Strong understanding of AC HV plant infrastructure and equipment, both AIS and GIS.
- Working knowledge of National Grid standards and specifications.
- Experience leading multi‑discipline proposal/bid development to completion.
- Knowledge of design and site construction review; secondary system design awareness is advantageous.
- Familiarity with control systems, transformers, HVDC, interconnectors, and HV protection and control (beneficial).
- CDAE / LCDAE approval preferred.
