The Relay Technician II performs electrical testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of protective relays in power stations with minimal supervision. The role requires using relay test equipment and software to verify the operation of relays, control circuits, and associated protection devices within substations.
- Lead safety culture and mentor team members.
- Install, commission, test, and maintain protective relaying equipment.
- Write standard procedures for commissioning, testing, and maintenance of protective relays.
- Conduct function testing of substation control circuits, transformers, and circuit breakers.
- Create relay macros and testing routines to verify protection and control designs.
- Perform end‑to‑end relay testing with software and analyze relay response to fault simulations.
- Review relay settings and logic equations to confirm system operation matches design.
- Develop testing and isolation procedures for outage situations.
- Install and test communication systems such as SCADA, GOOSE, Modbus, and fiber.
- Execute circuit analysis of protective relays, instrument transformers, and AC/DC systems.
- Troubleshoot distribution and transmission control circuits.

The position demands the ability to work overtime, travel out of town, and maintain a valid driver’s license with a good record. Physical requirements include climbing ladders, standing for extended periods, and lifting up to 70 lb. - Possess hands‑on experience installing, maintaining, testing, and repairing protective relays in transmission, generation, or distribution substations.
- Demonstrate knowledge of relay test software.
- Communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
- Experience with circuit breakers, transformers, switchgear, or similar equipment.
- Hold a bachelor’s or associate degree in electrical/electronic technology, military training, or a 4‑year engineering degree (preferred).
- Obtain NETA II certification (preferred).
- Ability to climb ladders, stand for long periods, and lift up to 70 lb.
