  • Navigation and Piloting: Safely navigate the tug boat through various water conditions, using navigational aids, charts, and radar to ensure the safe passage of the vessel and its tow. Monitor weather conditions and adjust course as necessary.
  • Safety and Emergency Response: Implement and enforce safety procedures and protocols to protect crew members, vessels, and the environment. Respond swiftly and effectively to emergencies, such as fires, collisions, or equipment malfunctions, ensuring the safety of all personnel and property.
  • Towing and Maneuvering: Operate winches, lines, and towing equipment to connect, disconnect, and tow vessels or objects. Execute precise maneuvers to assist ships during docking, undocking, and berthing operations. Maintain control of the towed object, adjusting speed and direction as required.
  • Maintenance and Inspections: Oversee routine maintenance and inspections of the tug boat, including engines, propulsion systems, and safety equipment. Identify and report any defects or issues promptly, ensuring that the vessel is in good working condition at all times.
  • Communication and Coordination: Maintain clear and effective communication with the crew, port authorities, and other vessels to ensure smooth operations. Coordinate activities with other tug boat captains and maritime personnel to facilitate safe and efficient movements within the waterways.

  • Experience working in Charleston Harbor and knowledge of local currents, tides, and weather patterns (strongly preferred)
  • Able to pass a USCG physical and drug/alcohol screening
  • Valid TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential)
  • Ability to assess risks quickly and make safe, effective decisions under pressure
  • Proficiency with electronic navigation systems, including ECDIS, AIS, GPS, and radar
  • Solid understanding of line handling, tow gear, and emergency towing procedures
  • Proven experience handling vessels in tight harbor and docking/undocking situations, especially with large container ships, bulk carriers, and tankers
  • First Aid / CPR certification
  • In-depth understanding of COLREGS, navigation rules, and port regulations
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience operating tugs, with at least 2 years as a captain in harbor assist, ship escort, or coastal towing
  • Physically fit for climbing ladders, working on deck, and handling heavy lines in all weather conditions
  • Valid USCG Master of Towing Vessels endorsement (Inland and/or Near Coastal; preference for both)
  • History of working with ship pilots and coordinating safely with multiple vessels in congested waterways
