The Product Support and Logistics Division (PSLD) oversees worldwide distribution of aftermarket parts, integrated logistics, and global service to support Caterpillar’s dealer network. PSLD focuses on customer success and continuously explores new ideas to drive growth.
The Packaging Engineer will design and develop both returnable and expendable packaging for individual parts and bulk shipments, ensuring timely and efficient receipt, delivery, and preservation of material. The role also creates packaging solutions for internal logistics and aims to optimize costs while protecting parts.
- Establish packaging and processing specifications for new products, sourcing introductions, cost‑savings, and supply‑chain improvements.
- Communicate packaging issues with facilities regarding receiving, warehousing, and line‑side delivery.
- Perform cost analysis on existing packaging processes and recommend improvements.
- Lead Green Belt projects.
- Develop packaging solutions to protect finished painted components and improve transport efficiency.
- Conduct containerization analysis, testing, quoting, and validate new packaging during pilot phases.
- Coordinate with operations on storage and ergonomic considerations and develop kitting packaging.
- Validate returnable quantities through simulations.
- Resolve safety or quality issues caused by current packaging.
- Address packaging‑related issues reported by customers and process partners.
- Develop, communicate, and maintain supplier packaging requirements.
- Audit compliance with packaging specifications.
- Collaborate with vendors and purchasing on joint process improvements.
- Create packaging concepts using 3D modeling software such as Pro‑E.

The position is based in Lebanon, IN, with occasional commuting to Lafayette, IN, and may require up to 10 % domestic travel. It is a first‑shift, 100 % on‑site role with no hybrid or remote schedule.

- Knowledge of packaging tools and practices; ability to design safe, attractive packaging solutions.
- Understanding of customer service concepts and ability to meet or exceed expectations.
- Strong effective communication skills for gathering data and obtaining approvals.
- Technical expertise to develop solutions for engineering and supply‑chain challenges.
- Proficiency with CAD/CAE tools to produce, analyze, and test design drafts.
- Ability to leverage engineering software or AI in design and decision‑making.
- Experience with manufacturing application systems and safety regulations.
- Troubleshooting expertise and data‑query analysis (SAS, Business Objects, Excel, Access).
- Proficiency in CREO, SolidWorks, Pack Assist, and other engineering programs.
- Project management and Six Sigma Green/Black Belt experience.
- Ability to devise creative solutions for complex problems and knowledge of material‑handling equipment.
- Strong interpersonal, teamwork, and organizational skills.
- Background in heavy‑industrial packaging, domestic and international collaboration.
- Membership in professional organizations such as ISM or APICS.
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing, quality principles, and ability to work independently.

The expected salary range is $95,640 – $143,520, with total compensation varying based on factors such as experience and location.
