This intermediate‑level Vegetation Management (VM) position involves contractor management and oversight under general supervision. Incumbents develop advanced skills, work independently on complex tasks, and apply fundamental concepts to varied, fairly complex work. The role manages IVM programs such as multi‑circuit planned maintenance, system‑level herbicide applications, reactive customer‑requested work, and hazard‑tree programs to improve reliability and regulatory compliance.
Key responsibilities include developing vegetation management work plans and budgets, ensuring compliance with federal and state standards, and monitoring contractor performance for safety and productivity. The employee leads VM crews during emergency storm operations, creates communication plans for community and customer concerns, and coordinates with government agencies to maintain regulatory compliance. Additional duties involve regular right‑of‑way inspections, financial management of expenditures and forecasts, and overseeing construction clearing activities.
Basic qualifications vary by level: a Bachelor’s degree with 1‑3 years of electrical or VM experience, an Associate’s degree with 3‑7 years, or a high‑school diploma with 3‑10 years of utility experience, plus ISA Certified Arborist, Pesticide Applicator License, and a valid driver’s license. Senior‑level candidates need an Associate’s degree (or high‑school + 10 years) with 7 years experience, Utility Arborist Certification, and three years of arborist work. Desired qualifications include a Bachelor’s in engineering, forestry or a technical field, 3 years related experience, PMP, GIS, or Forester certifications, and strong communication and project evaluation skills.
The position requires field mobility with travel of 5‑15 % and may include relocation assistance; candidates must reside within reasonable commuting distance. This is a non‑union, non‑visa‑sponsored role, and Duke Energy is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal employment opportunity. Applicants must meet all basic qualifications to be considered.
