NV5 provides full-service geotechnical assistance throughout all phases of the development process, from feasibility and preliminary studies to geotechnical design, evaluations, and construction oversight. Our team of qualified geotechnical engineering, construction materials testing (CMT), and contractor quality control (CQC) professionals assist owners and contractors in identifying geohazards and developing the safest, most cost-effective, and resilient earthwork and foundation solutions.
- Oversee lab operations and ensure compliance with industry standards (AMRL, CCRL, AASHTO, Caltrans).
- Maintain high testing accuracy and quality control in partnership with the Laboratory Engineer.
- Supervise and mentor Lab Technicians to build a collaborative high‑performing team.
- Drive continuous improvement in lab processes, safety, and efficiency.
- Manage lab technicians, coordinating staffing and daily schedules.
- Review all laboratory‑generated data for technical accuracy.
- Prepare or review final laboratory reports and deliver them to clients after project manager approval.
- Communicate problems and deviations to contractors, supervisors, and project managers.
- Ensure comprehensive communication with project managers and staff for effective project management.
- Maintain laboratory quality control to guarantee accurate test results.
- Oversee acquisition of new field and laboratory equipment.
- Coordinate laboratory equipment maintenance and calibration.
- Update laboratory accreditations and serve as liaison with accreditation agencies.
- Update regulatory licenses for nuclear testing equipment and act as Assistant Radiation Safety Officer.
- Manage facility maintenance for the laboratory location.
- Perform testing accurately according to recognized standards.
- Solve problems and identify data quality issues.
- Make sound decisions using professional judgment with minimal supervision.
- Perform labor‑intensive tasks, including safe handling of concrete and soil samples.
- Prepare electronic reports and technical documents using Microsoft Office.
- Learn new electronic report documentation platforms.
- Lift, carry, push or pull objects up to 50 lb occasionally.
- Perform general office tasks such as copying, filing, and frequent telephone use.
- Walk, stand, kneel, bend, reach, and stoop intermittently.
- Adhere to NV5 safety practices and policies.

We’re looking for a Geotechnical/Materials Laboratory Manager who thrives in a hands‑on, technical environment and is passionate about quality, leadership, and innovation.
- Demonstrate expertise in geotechnical and materials testing methods.
- Exhibit strong leadership and organizational capabilities.
- Apply knowledge of regulatory standards and lab accreditation processes.
- Hold a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Possess at least 5 years of construction and laboratory testing experience.
- Experience with ASTM, AASHTO, and Caltrans testing procedures for soils, aggregates, asphalt, concrete, masonry, and rebar; maintain required certifications.
- Communicate and interface effectively with clients and coworkers.
- Demonstrate strong written, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).
- Exhibit excellent interpersonal, teamwork, and problem‑solving skills.
- Hold a valid driver’s license with an insurable driving record.
- Hold ACI Laboratory Testing certification or equivalent.
- Hold Caltrans certification or testing experience.
- Sit and work at a computer keyboard for extended periods.

The pay range for this California position is $32.00‑$40.00 per hour; base pay may vary based on knowledge, skills, and experience. Restricted stock units may be provided, along with a full range of medical, dental, life insurance, PTO, 401(k) and professional development opportunities.
