Typical projects include port and terminal facilities, wharves, bridges, causeways, bulkheads, docks, piers, marinas, cruise terminals, and liquid or bulk cargo facilities. The Senior Marine Structural Engineer will lead and mentor engineers, collaborate closely with Project Managers and Business Development teams, and serve as a technical and client-facing leader within the organization.
This position works closely with the VP of Engineering, Business Development Managers, Project Managers, and external clients to deliver safe, high-quality engineering solutions while advancing Orion’s long-term strategic objectives.
- Build, maintain, and expand long-term client relationships
- Perform advanced structural analysis and design for new and existing marine structures, including bulkheads, sheet pile walls, retaining walls, concrete wharves, and mooring/breasting dolphins
- Take personal responsibility for safety and the safety of coworkers and others on site
- Provide technical input during project planning and execution phases
- Prepare and submit pre-qualification packages, negotiate contracts, and present proposals to clients
- Develop and implement improved engineering methods, tools, and processes
- Prepare bid packages including drawings, specifications, and construction cost estimates
- Mentor and guide senior and junior engineers through technical leadership and professional development
- Participate in hiring, performance evaluation, and development planning for engineering staff
- Exercise stop-work authority when unsafe conditions are identified
- Estimating, scheduling, and cost control
- Review and approve scopes of work, budgets, and schedules
- Serve as a primary technical liaison for clients, partners, and stakeholders
- Utilize industry-standard software such as LPile, DeepEX, CWALLSHT, SAP, and STAAD to support design and finite element modeling
- Review and approve project documents for accuracy, quality, and compliance
- Represent Orion Engineering at industry conferences, symposiums, and networking events
- Provide expert technical guidance on safe design, constructability, and engineering best practices
- Lead or support proposal development, including scope definition, budgeting, pricing, and scheduling
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all company, client, and proprietary information
- Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and company policies
- Promptly report safety concerns, policy violations, or regulatory issues
- Identify and evaluate new business and project opportunities aligned with Orion’s strategic goals
- Collaborate with engineering and project teams to ensure successful delivery of assigned projects

Junior Structural Engineer (2 openings each location)
- Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree desired but not required
- Minimum 5 years of experience in marine structural engineering design
- Strong working knowledge of:
- Experience Level: 10+ years of structural engineering experience; Master’s degree desired but not required
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in a U.S. state or ability to obtain licensure through reciprocity within 6 months
- Self-starter capable of working independently with minimal supervision
- Experience Level: Entry-level to early career
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis (required)
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) when visiting jobsites, including hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toed boots, hearing protection, respirators, or personal flotation devices as required
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated business acumen and understanding of the marine construction industry
- Experience Level: 5+ years of structural engineering experience; Master’s degree desired but not required
- Ability to interface effectively with all levels of the organization and external clients
- High level of integrity, discretion, and trustworthiness
- Prior experience in marine construction, heavy civil, heavy industrial, or engineering design environments preferred
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and adaptable to shifting priorities
