Performs a variety of unskilled tasks in the operation and maintenance of a water/wastewater treatment plant on an assigned shift; does related work as required; has no supervisory capacity.
Operates treatment facilities to control flow and processing of water/wastewater, sludge, and effluent.
Operates, repairs, and maintains the water/wastewater treatment plant's facilities.
Operates valves and gates either manually or by remote control, starts and stops pumps, engines and generators to control and adjust flow and treatment processes.
Monitors gauges, meters, and control panels.
Observes and reports abnormalities to supervisor.
Performs routine maintenance and servicing work in the water/wastewater treatment plant.
Performs routine laboratory tests.
Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work.
Takes samples and performs routine laboratory tests and analyses.
Maintains shift log and records meter and gauge readings.
Performs routine maintenance functions and custodial duties.

Must be able to ascend and descend up to 1,100 stair steps per 8-hour shift.
Diagnose operating problems and perform necessary corrective action during work shift.

Must be able to walk up to 3 miles per 8-hour shift.
Knowledge of the principles, methods, and tools employed in the general operations of engines, pumps, and related equipment.
Basic biological and chemical principles.
Must be able to push a push-type, power lawn mower for up to 3 hours per 8-hour shift.
Must be able to lift up to 45 bags weighing up to 50 pounds each from floor level up to waist high in an 8- hour shift.
Understands and carries out oral and written directions.
Must be able to work in all types of weather.
1 to 2 years of experience in operating water/wastewater treatment plants.
Basic familiarity of the principles and practices of water/wastewater treatment plant operations; operating principles of valves, pumps, and motors; principles and methods of bacteriological and chemical sewage analyses; effects and problems of industrial waste in water/wastewater treatment processes, principles of supervision and training; safe work practices.
Learns and gains skills in a variety of equipment maintenance, servicing, and operating tasks.
