  • Frequently sit in a vehicle for multiple hours and wear a seatbelt at all times while in the vehicle.
  • Maintain a clean, professional appearance and a friendly demeanor.
  • Assist with the removal of roadway hazards, roadway debris, roadside litter, and roadside debris by walking the road right of way and collecting litter, trash, and debris then depositing into plastic bags. These bags will then be loaded into a vehicle and transported to a central collection point and deposited into dumpsters. Animal carcass removal may be required – large animals must be removed from travel lanes where a vendor service will collect the animal carcass. Small animal carcasses will be relocated to unpaved areas of the roadside.
  • Perform clerical duties such as record keeping of daily vehicle inspection reports, incident reports, reviewing and responding to email messages, and complete required online and in person training courses.
  • Operate a motor vehicle to respond to service calls quickly and safely while complying with applicable state and federal laws.
  • Respond to crashes and incidents occurring on the tollway and providing temporary traffic control measures while assisting police, fire, EMS, and towing personnel when necessary. These include placing road cones and/or LED flares in live travel lanes, using the Roadside Assistance truck as a traffic control apparatus, sweeping debris out of travel lanes, placing quickdry for fluid spills, using push bumpers to move inoperable vehicles out of travel lanes, or pulling a vehicle using a tow rope.
  • Assist with transporting inter-office mail and other supplies as needed.
  • Meet or exceed performance criteria established for the position including response time targets, litter removal or plaza security checks (dependent on shift), customer survey responses, safety standards, and vehicle cleanliness.
  • Patrol toll plazas and maintenance sites to ensure security measures are in place and there are no active issues such as fires or burst water pipes.
  • Maintain compliance with all company and client policies and procedures
  • Safely, carefully, and professionally performing all emergency roadside services, including but not limited to: using a jack to safely lift a motor vehicle; changing a tire, filling a tire with air, jump-starting a battery, filling a gas tank with a small amount of gasoline or diesel fuel, filling coolant reservoirs, adding additional oil to an engine, using deicer or washer fluid to clean or unfreeze windshields, securing cargo loads, and assisting other minor mechanical issues.

  • Federal Highway Administration SHRP2/National TIM Responder Training certification is a plus.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Frequent hand/eye coordination to operate computes, other electronic equipment, hand tools, vehicles, and office equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as emails, schedules, and procedure manuals.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 75 pounds.
  • Frequently stand; walk; climb or balance; stoop; kneel; crouch, or crawl; reach with hands and arms; grasping and gripping or pinching of both hands.
  • Must wear ANSI Class III safety attire while working. Class III uniform shirts, jackets, rain/snow jackets, black pants, summer hats, winter hats, snake gaiters, work gloves, winter work gloves, high-vis balaclavas (face covering for cold weather, rain/snow pants, and ice cleats are provided. Employees must use their own undershirts, socks, and boots.
  • Must be able to spend long durations sitting in a vehicle seat.
  • Frequently communicate via speech, ability to hear and understand verbal speech to maintain communication
  • Ability to react quickly, remain calm, and make decisions using good judgment based on training and standard operating procedures in emergency and non-emergency situations is a must. These qualities must often be shown while working in an outdoor environment that may include inclement weather conditions and heavy volumes of high-speed traffic.
  • Background screening and drug screening required for all candidates upon conditional offer of employment
  • Daily use of computer and keyboard, tablet devices such as an iPad, vehicle touchscreens and steering wheel controls, standard office equipment, and mobile telephones.
  • Initial safety and job training is required upon completion of onboarding.
  • National Incident Management System 100, 200, 700 Certifications are a plus.
  • Ability to achieve and maintain departmental performance standards.
  • Requires a minimum of one year of general work experience, preferably in an outdoor environment.
  • Uncorrected or corrected vision that is able to read written and electronic documents, understand and interpret information, type on a keyboard and tablet, use a mobile phone, read roadway signage, and read license plates.
  • Yearly re-certification exams are required, with a minimum passing score of 85% for a Level 1 Driver.
  • Knowledge of car care and maintenance procedures and the ability to use equipment such as hydraulic jacks, booster cables, impact wrenches, air compressors and general tool sets preferred.
  • Must be able to communicate proficiently in English. Ability to speak other languages is a plus; Spanish is the second-most frequently encountered language.
  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent.
  • Hazardous Material awareness or responder training and/or certification is a plus.
  • Must possess a valid State of Colorado Driver’s License and have a clean driving record.
  • Must be able to discern dangerous situations and avoid being struck by high-speed traffic which will be operating within 10’ of work areas.
  • Must be able to perform constant physical labor including stooping, crouching, bending, lifting, twisting, etc. while outdoors in all weather conditions for full shift.
  • Must be able to carry heavy objects such as hydraulic jacks and be able to run to avoid errant vehicles or to remove debris from the travel lanes.
  • Must be able to communicate and operate a cellphone.
  • Yearly refresher training at the CDOT Traffic Incident Management track is required and furnished by WSP.
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts as assigned, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Due to the nature of the position may require short notice overtime work. Due to the demands of this position outstanding attendance is required.
  • Experience with Traffic Incident Management, traffic control, traffic management, or incident management as well as associated training for any of those items is a plus.
