Provide technical support on troubleshooting of the SIS systems and data gathering to support investigations on incidents. Recommend safety system maintenance activities.
Develop the Refinery PCS including enhancements for operator support to increase plant availability / reliability & elimination of bad actors.
Test and supervise the implementation of safety critical systems in conjunction with the department and other refinery resources. These may be on the site Instrument Protective System platforms or on relay systems.
The Automation Engineer is responsible for the configuration of hardware and software used to achieve control of the process units, such that, they support the safety, reliability, and operability of ongoing operations, as well as facilitating data gathering and involvement in business improvement projects. To use regulatory process control technology and techniques to ensure the reliability of the refining processes. This includes, providing support on process control issues, assisting the relevant groups on refinery optimization issues, performance monitoring and continuous improvement of process control.
Ensure that the Process Control Migration program is running at the economic optimum by actively managing the cost-effective replacement and migration of PCS equipment, components and applications that are described as 'end of life'. The program reflects a 10 year look ahead to Turnaround cycles.
Create and report appropriate metrics for APC schemes to include information on benefits, uptime, constraints, violations, and constraint removal opportunities.
Manage automation projects including safety, scope, budgets and schedules. Implement the automation portion of small projects which typically includes reviewing, modifying and approving designs by others that impact on the automation systems, assisting with the selection of field instruments & operator interfaces.
Lead the safe and robust implementation of all Automation changes on the Refinery PCS & Safety Instrumented Systems.
Maintain the operator graphics and update as necessary for project/plant/control scheme modifications.
Monitor performance of APC schemes. Support operations in their use of APC applications.
Support the refinery Alarm management effort by, implementing and maintaining the Alarm Management hardware/software systems, assisting in monitoring and reducing system Bad actors. • Design systemsto remove standing alarmsfor offline Process units. Provide control expertise to the alarm management team.
Monitor the performance of Inferential Properties and improve where necessary.
Design and build DCS graphics for the control systems in accordance with site standards.
Provide input to large capital projects in reference to Control system Architecture, document reviews (P&IDs, FDS, DDS etc.), FATs, SATs & Site commissioning activities.
Lead Alarm Management Program, define practices and roll out across the refinery.
Provide support to operationsin troubleshooting process control issues. Design, test and implement regulatory control schemes, as required for process, plant or control scheme modifications.
Lead third party vendors with onsite activities.
Ensure there is a consistent Alarm Strategy on the DCS and ensuring that the Software applications for the active management of the AM program are reliable and robust.
Coordinate control system changes arising from alarm management design recommendations.
Monitor the performance of regulatory control loops and investigate / troubleshoot / tune under performance. Where appropriate, design test and implement regulatory control scheme modifications.
Experience in refining and/or chemical industry.
Honeywell control systems experience desirable.
Strong judgement and the ability to identify critical situations and respond accordingly.

Disciplined to adhere to all refinery instructions and procedures, including Refinery Risk Management Program.
5 Years’ experience in an engineering role
Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to understand and develop business cases, understand cost/benefit models and ability to take calculated risks.
Ability to communicate effectively with all levels within the organization and influence stakeholders.
Bachelor’s degree in engineering
Ability to coordinate and combine resources available to resolve issues; bring together strengths of other team members to effectively solve problems.
