Mechanical Engineer

Description

• Perform thermal expansion and contraction analyses, and incorporate compensation methods in design for precision mechanical assemblies.
• Create 3D CAD models, detailed drawings and documentation; work with vendors, fabrication, and assembly teams to ensure design intent is met through manufacturing and assembly.
• Develop mechanical design solutions for kinematic mounts, precision optical systems, and complex mechanical mechanisms from concept through production.
• Select and evaluate materials and components with attention to mechanical and thermal properties; perform trade-offs and optimization with respect to stiffness, CTE (coefficient of thermal expansion), mass, and manufacturability.
• Lay out optical assemblies, integrating mechanical tolerances, optical alignment requirements, material selection, and thermal expansion considerations.
• Collaborate cross-functionally (optics, electronics, manufacturing, quality) to ensure designs meet system-level requirements, schedule, cost and performance targets.

Requirements

We are seeking a motivated and adaptable Mechanical Engineer with a strong background in mechanical design, especially in kinematic mounts, optical layouts, mechanisms, material science and thermal expansion, to join our team. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, comfortable working independently and collaboratively within a broader engineering group, and eager to learn and grow quickly in a dynamic environment.

• Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team; strong initiative, self-management and willingness to learn.
• Proven experience in mechanical design with key focus areas including mechanism design, optical layouts or precision assemblies, kinematic mounts, and material/thermal considerations.
• Familiarity with manufacturing processes including CNC machining, precision assembly, alignment fixtures, tolerance stack-up.
• Demonstrated track record of design from concept to manufacture in a fast‐paced environment.
• U.S citizenship
• Strong problem-solving mindset: able to quickly come up to speed on new technical challenges and apply logical, practical solutions.
• Experience working in the nuclear industry
• Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) or thermal/structural simulation tools for mechanical assemblies.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo, or equivalent) and ability to create detailed models and drawings.
• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field.
• Experience sourcing and working with vendors for precision machining, optical mounts, and assemblies.
• An active DOE Q or TS/SCI Clearance
• Strong familiarity with material science concepts and thermal expansion behavior of materials in precision mechanical systems.
• Excellent communication skills – able to collaborate with engineers from different disciplines and communicate design trade-offs clearly.
