This position is accountable for ensuring the safe, efficient operation of engines, motors, and equipment aboard the assigned dredge. The incumbent works closely with the Dredge Captain, Deck Captain, and Dredge Superintendents to achieve these goals. They must also support Orion’s core values of Safety, Quality, Delivery, Teamwork, and Integrity.
All employees are expected to observe safety responsibilities and actively maintain a safe workplace; failure to do so may result in disciplinary action up to termination.
- Coordinate with Dredge Captain and Deck Captain to ensure safe, efficient engine and equipment operation.
- Supervise and coordinate crew activities for operating and maintaining engines and equipment aboard the dredge.
- Inspect engines and equipment, perform repairs, and direct others to make necessary repairs.
- Order supplies and maintain an appropriate parts inventory.
- Stand engine room watches and manage watch schedules.
- Monitor fuel usage and order additional fuel as needed.
- Use hand and power tools to repair machinery.
- Maintain engine room logbooks.
- Monitor gauges for proper operation and make appropriate adjustments.
- Instruct and train crew in safe and proper job procedures.
- Correct safety deficiencies or other unsafe conditions aboard the dredge.
- Maintain the fuel barge and assess repair needs.
- Supervise the work activities of the 2nd Engineer aboard the vessel.
- Participate in safety and environmental initiatives to ensure regulatory compliance and improve company programs.
- Ensure the safety of co‑workers and others encountered on the job.
- Stop work when an unsafe condition or situation is anticipated or observed.
- Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, company policies, and procedures.
- Report any violations of laws, regulations, or company policies promptly.
- Perform additional administrative and technical duties as assigned, such as certification and safety training.

- Remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as directed.

A minimum of two years of dredging experience is required, with prior 2nd Engineer experience preferred. The role operates on a 2‑weeks on/1‑week off schedule, 12‑hour days, and the incumbent must obtain a Tankerman license within one year. Prior knowledge of marine engines, equipment, gauges, and instruments is essential.
The incumbent must quickly learn the technical aspects of dredging, be an effective supervisor, and interact well with other crew members on the vessel.
The incumbent must be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation and must wear appropriate personal protective equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel‑toe shoes, and flotation devices. Driving a passenger vehicle to visit work locations is required, and the individual must remain calm and respond appropriately during emergencies, including timely evacuation.
