Risk Management & Independence Manager

Description

The manager will liaise with partners and professionals throughout the Grant Thornton International (GTI) network, assisting partners and managing directors in evaluating new opportunities or existing relationships that are subject to independence requirements, and supporting the adoption of global independence quality‑control requirements.

The US Independence Group monitors activities of various independence standard‑setters and regulatory bodies, including the AICPA, SEC, PCAOB, IFAC, GAO, and Department of Labor, ensuring the firm stays compliant with evolving standards.

The Independence Group also coordinates with quality‑control representatives and GTI member firms to discuss the ramifications of services and relationships, assists with relationship checks via the Relationship Checking System, supports acquisitions, monitors personal independence compliance, and publishes policies, training courses, and resources.

The manager will develop and present independence training, maintain publications and resources, provide internal consultations on nonaudit services and business relationships, and must communicate effectively with practitioners across assurance, tax, advisory, litigation support, risk, and recovery practices.

• Advise partners and professionals on applying independence standards to specific fact situations.
• Perform relationship checking activities using the Relationship Checking System (RCS).
• Monitor independence for large private equity firms subject to SEC oversight.
• Support evaluation of services and relationships for Grant Thornton Advisors LLC acquisitions.
• Train the INDUS team on AICPA independence standards for nonaudit services and private audit client checks.
• Develop and update firm independence policies and quality‑control requirements.
• Create and deliver technical content for professional training programs.
• Maintain independence resources such as nonaudit services matrices and publications.
• Liaise with Grant Thornton International members on independence matters and conflict confirmations.
• Conduct restricted‑list activities, including report reconciliation and edit coordination.
• Monitor activities of independence standard‑setting and regulatory bodies and review filing alerts.
• Perform personal compliance tasks, including tracking investment accounts and evaluating financial relationships.
• Oversee the annual independence certification process.
• Manage multiple projects simultaneously, leading diverse global teams.
• Provide day‑to‑day oversight of independence compliance functions and review team members' work.

Requirements

This role requires a broad knowledge of professional standards to evaluate independence, develop policies and quality‑control processes, work collaboratively across groups such as Private Equity, and manage competing priorities in a fast‑paced, results‑based environment.

• Minimum five years of accounting experience, preferably in a national or independence office; CPA required.
• Strong analytical, technical, and professional skills with knowledge of international accounting and consulting firms.
• Ability to acquire, synthesize, and present technical information clearly.
• Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and presentation abilities.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and other Office tools.
• Strong project planning and multitasking skills, meeting tight deadlines.
• High attention to detail and capability to work on highly technical material.
• Willingness to work additional hours and limited travel as needed.
