The PV Design Engineer is responsible for creating photovoltaic (PV) array and battery energy storage system (BESS) site layouts and performing solar energy modeling. The role collaborates closely with estimating/pre‑construction, engineering, and design teams to develop comprehensive design packages and ensure smooth transition from design to field construction and energization.
The engineer evaluates meteorological data, reviews RFP engineering exhibits, defines site constraints, and develops PV models using industry‑standard techniques. Responsibilities also include finance‑grade solar resource assessment, independent engineering report writing, PV module and inverter selection, tracker topology analysis, and supporting estimating, business development, and commercial agreement reviews.
The role works independently under the Project Design Manager, coordinates with other engineering disciplines, maintains a database of design records, and attends mandatory training on new products and safety. Site visits are performed to verify construction compliance with design drawings, and the engineer ensures proper documentation of technical data following best‑practice standards.
The position involves outdoor work on uneven surfaces, occasional lifting, bending, and travel up to 30 %. Employees work in a climate‑controlled office at least 50 % of the time and may encounter varying weather conditions and industrial noise while in the field.
The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (ABET‑accredited preferred) and has 4–8 years of relevant experience, preferably in utility‑scale solar projects. Required competencies include solar meteorological data analysis, solar simulation modeling, and strong analytical problem‑solving skills, along with proficiency in MS Office, AutoCAD 2D, BlueBeam, and PVSyst.
Salary ranges from $113,500 to $137,500 annually, paid weekly, and includes competitive benefits such as 15 days PTO plus holidays, a 401(k) plan with a 100 % match up to 6 %, company‑paid life and AD&D insurance, and comprehensive medical and dental coverage for employees and families.
