HVAC Startup Technician

Description

The Technician manages and performs startup activities and system performance evaluations on new construction and existing building projects of all types, documenting pre‑functional activities and maintaining action item lists. The Technician also joins the final commissioning team, participating in point‑to‑point system checkouts, functional testing, and resolving operational deficiencies identified during the process.

• Review project scope with commissioning officer before start.
• Perform all startup activities for diverse project types and sizes.
• Record pre‑functional activities in paperless commissioning system.
• Keep an up‑to‑date action item list in the same system.
• Update project management daily on job status and report issues.
• Aid scheduling of equipment and system startups.
• Adjust startup crew staffing to meet schedule.
• Communicate technical details to vendors/factory reps to fix manufacturer defects.
• Mentor commissioning apprentices in their duties.
• Troubleshoot system problems and coordinate resolutions.
• Support Test and Balance and manufacturers’ reps in issue resolution.
• Supervise startup technicians and apprentices as needed.
• Coordinate with other trades to keep construction on schedule.
• Assist senior commissioning technicians with commissioning tasks.

Requirements

• Minimum 5 years commercial HVAC startup or service experience.
• High school diploma or GED; technical HVAC/R degree preferred.
• Ability to travel up to 25%; valid Georgia driver’s license with clean record.
• CFC certification.
• Preferred: construction industry experience, 2+ years managing mechanical work, boiler/chiller service, pneumatic & DDC controls, new‑construction commissioning, MCAA foreman training, OSHA 30 certification.
• Self‑starter; works independently or in team.
• Strong leadership, communication and technical reasoning skills.
• Professional appearance and exceptional work ethic.
• Proficient with computers and HVAC equipment (AHUs, cooling towers, chillers).
• Capable of running a startup crew and handling multiple priorities.
• Exposure to hot/cold temperatures, dust, noise and construction hazards.
• Frequent walking/standing; lift loads up to 50 lb.
• Local and occasional out‑of‑town travel to job sites.
