The Role

Overview

Designs physical substation layouts, drawings, BOMs, and calculations for high‑voltage projects.

Tasks

-Learn and apply corporate standard engineering practices. -Create Substation Bill of Materials, including manufacturer part numbers, quantities, footage, etc. -Take personal responsibility for the quality and accuracy of his/her work. -Bring potential project-related problems and possible solutions to the attention of the responsible party. -May be called upon to calculate ground grid requirements to IEEE standards using task-specific software. -Produce High Voltage substation layouts & elevation drawings from a one-line electrical drawing. -Oversee project-specific activities of drafters and more junior designers. -Produce conduit & Grounding drawings. -May be called upon to calculate structure heights and weights, concrete volumes, equipment fit-up, or other basic tasks. -Complete work in pre-defined times to meet proposal and project schedules. -Calculate cable lengths, conduit fill, or other basic tasks. -Research information in catalogs, specifications, corporate standards, or other reference material -Produce new drawings from examples of previous project and/or standards. -Learn and use task-specific software, including the document management system.

What You Bring

-Strong knowledge physical substation layout, elevations, grounding, foundations, and conduit -Strong knowledge of civil/structural codes and standards (NESC, and applicable IEEE, ANSI, AISC, and ACI) is a plus. -Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft office products including Word, Excel, and Outlook -Ability to produce steel drawings is a plus. -General knowledge of control circuits and ground grid theory & design -Extensive knowledge of CADD programs such as AutoCAD -Demonstrated oral and written communication skills to effectively convey information to team members, management, and clients when necessary. -This position requires minimal physical effort. -Must be able to work extensive overtime at certain times. -Strong knowledge and proven experience creating the bill of materials as it relates to a substation. -Strong knowledge of the major components of substations and the types of drawings required to construct an electrical substation. -Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment. -Must be able to endure prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer for a minimum of 8 hours a day -May occasionally lift up to 25 pounds at a time. -Must be able and willing to travel overnight for trainings and/or meetings as required (10%) -Travel out of town for short periods of time as required by projects and assignments. -Mathematics, including algebra and basic trigonometry.
