The role involves winding and related work, as well as assisting qualified winders with inspecting, repairing, rebuilding, and assembling equipment such as small and large motors, transformers, exciters, and generators in the Central Machine Shop and on temporary assignments.
Key duties include operating motor shop tools for coil stripping, burning out windings, spray painting, and steam cleaning; taping jumper and series connections on stators and field connections on DC frames; disassembling and assembling DC motors up to 10 hp and AC motors with one‑piece end bells; rewinding random wound coils on 4‑8 pole motors; cleaning and spray‑painting generator components; fabricating support blocking, wedges, and other necessary items; operating bridge cranes, hoists, and fork trucks; performing shop maintenance; assisting higher‑classified employees; adhering to safety and shop procedures; supporting AEP’s cultural goals; reporting irregularities and keeping records; and interfacing with external resources while providing general assistance for ID fan disassembly, cleaning, re‑assembly, and QC documentation.
Applicants must have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience and be able to perform the listed duties while acquiring additional skills. Required pre‑employment testing includes EEIMASS, a Plant Maintenance Selection System (MASS) test, and demonstrations of specific tasks such as taping motor connections, bearing removal and installation, coil winding from motor data cards, varnish removal, distinguishing AC from DC motors, and proper use of a volt‑ohm meter. The position has a medium physical demand level, requiring occasional exertion of 20‑50 lb and frequent handling of 10‑25 lb.
The role is classified at Compensation Grade N005‑530 with a salary range of $30.92 to $33.20 per hour.
