The role of Control Systems Engineer – Submarines is a full‑time, hybrid position based in Derby, requiring three days in the office. You will lead the transition from architectural concepts to physical designs, supporting concept development, detailed design, testing and verification while keeping safety at the forefront. The engineer will also help develop and enforce policies and procedures to ensure consistent engineering practices throughout the system life‑cycle.
In this role you will design and implement complex control system solutions that meet high‑level requirements, constraints and standards, working across disciplines to create new production and experimental test facilities. Responsibilities include writing sophisticated software modules, modernising legacy control systems, producing detailed hardware designs from P&IDs and equipment schedules, and troubleshooting integration issues during testing and commissioning. You will also prepare technical reports, provide supply‑chain technical support, and manage project planning to stay within cost and schedule targets.
The ideal candidate has prior experience in a similar industrial or nuclear manufacturing environment, with hands‑on expertise in industrial control systems and IT/OT networks. Proficiency with Rockwell/Allen Bradley platforms, specification and design of control hardware, and use of change‑configuration management tools and design software such as AutoCAD Electrical or E‑Plan is desirable. A solid understanding of IEC standards (e.g., Machinery Directive, BS7671, IEC 61131, IEC 61508/61511) and experience across the engineering product lifecycle are also required, together with a relevant engineering degree, professional accreditation and membership of a body such as the IET.
