Principal Highways Engineer

Description

As a Principal Highways Engineer you will manage the technical aspects of large‑scale highways projects, ensuring financial, quality and schedule objectives are met while exceeding client expectations. You may also undertake project‑management responsibilities, work closely with team leadership, and champion client care through proactive engagement and a culture of leadership and innovation. You will lead medium‑sized to moderately complex projects, coordinate teams of 5‑10 engineers and technicians, and optimise resource utilisation to deliver high‑quality outcomes.

• Lead multiple complex highways projects and multidisciplinary teams to achieve quality, budget, and safety targets.
• Develop and execute strategic project plans aligned with client and organisational objectives.
• Provide engineering design, risk management, resource allocation, and financial control for project components.
• Present technical solutions and negotiate with stakeholders at all levels.
• Drive innovation and continuous improvement within engineering teams.
• Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and sustainable development practices.
• Maintain chartered or equivalent professional status and contribute to industry publications or conferences.
• Mentor junior engineers and support succession planning.
• Supervise elements of large, complex highways projects, with project‑management experience preferred.

Requirements

• Hold a BSc/BEng or MSc/MEng (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
