Overview
Founded 1968
Year of establishment
The cooperative was established in 1968 to electrify remote villages in Alaska.
59 communities
Served by the cooperative
The cooperative provides electricity to 59 remote communities across Alaska.
33 turbines
Wind turbines installed
Deployment of wind turbines across 22 villages to reduce diesel dependence.
$1M saved
Annual fuel cost savings
A tug-and-barge fuel delivery initiative reduces annual costs by approximately $0.5–1 million.
Today it powers over 160 diesel units and a growing wind turbine fleet across 400,000 sq miles.
AVEC built partnerships funded by USDA, RUS, Denali Commission, and DOE to finance infrastructure and bulk fuel storage.
Joint ventures with native corporations installed turbines in Stebbins/St Michael and St Mary’s/Pitka’s Point.
Despite remote terrain reachable only by air or sea, AVEC supports modern living—schools, water, communications—in tiny villages.

930 metric tons CO₂
Annual CO₂ Reduction
The wind project avoids approximately 930 metric tons of CO₂ annually, equivalent to removing 207 gasoline-powered cars from the road.
$11.4M
Project Savings
The wind project is estimated to save approximately $11.4 million over a 25-year lifecycle.
2,100 metric tons CO₂
CO₂ Reduction at Pitka’s Point
Installed a similar turbine in Pitka’s Point/St. Mary’s, which avoids approximately 2,100 metric tons of CO₂ annually.
Operates 170 diesel generators purchasing over 8 million gallons of fuel annually to serve 58 rural villages.
Installed grid bridging system to allow diesel generators to turn off, further increasing wind penetration and reducing fuel consumption.
